The Arizona Coyotes have acquired defenseman Patrik Nemeth and two draft picks from the New York Rangers in exchange for defense prospect Ty Emberson, the clubs announced Wednesday.

Nemeth, 30, is a 6’4″, 230-pound left-handed defenseman who has two years remaining on his contract at a $2.5 million cap hit. He scored two goals and seven points while averaging 16:38 in 63 regular-season games with the Rangers in 2021–22.

The Coyotes acquired the Rangers’ 2025 second-round draft pick and an additional conditional draft selection to take on Nemeth’s deal. For the additional pick, Arizona will be able to choose between the Rangers’ 2024 third-round pick and their 2026 second-round pick.

In return, the Rangers receive 22-year-old right-handed defense prospect Ty Emberson. A third-round selection of the Coyotes in 2018, the 6’1″ Emberson scored four goals and 11 points in 58 AHL games with the Tucson Roadrunners in 2021–22.

The Coyotes now have four second-round picks (originally belonging to Toronto, Edmonton, New York, and Arizona) in the 2025 NHL Draft. That Toronto pick is also conditional: Arizona acquired it in last season’s Nick Ritchie/Ilya Lyubushkin trade and has the option to exchange it for Toronto’s 2023 third-round pick.

With Nemeth now in the fold, the Coyotes have 11 defensemen with NHL experience under contract for 2022–23: Jakob Chychrun, Shayne Gostisbehere, J.J. Moser, Victor Soderstrom, Troy Stecher, Josh Brown, Dysin Mayo, Nemeth, Vladislav Kolyachonok, Conor Timmins, and Cam Dineen.

Nemeth, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, has played 429 career NHL regular-season games with the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers, scoring 10 goals and 65 points. Additionally, he’s recorded two assists in 33 career playoff games with Dallas, Colorado, and New York.
