The New York Rangers acquired Barclay Goodrow from the Tampa Bay Lightning ahead of Saturday’s roster freeze and it appears they’re closing in on a contract extension.

According to DFO’s Frank Seravalli, the Rangers and Goodrow are closing in on a six-year deal with a cap hit of $3,600,000. The deal isn’t finalized and won’t become official until the league’s roster freeze has been lifted on Wednesday.

The Lightning acquired Goodrow along with a third-round pick back at the 2020 trade deadline in exchange for a first-round pick. He filled out Tampa’s defensive line along with Blake Coleman and Yanni Gourde and helped the team win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021.

Over parts of two seasons with the Lightning, Goodrow scored six goals and 22 points over 63 games. He also added three goals and 12 points over 43 playoff games for Tampa.

Goodrow, who just turned 28 years old in February, would have become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the month for the first time in his career.
