Bobby Ryan Doubtful for Matinee vs. Blackhawks

Bobby Ryan likely wants to put his start of the 2011-2012 season in his rear-view mirror. The former 2nd overall pick and Anaheim Ducks top liner hasn’t lived up to any of his expectations, scoring only five goals and nine points through 21 games. Certainly when you drafted him in the first or second round you didn’t expect a measly 20 goals and 35 points over a full season.

Following Wednesday night’s tilt with the Phoenix Coyotes, Ryan’s stock dropped even more, leaving the ice with a hip contusion that not only took him out of the game but allowed for a breakaway goal against in the process. Yesterday, the Cherry Hill, New Jersey native did not practice with the team which may or may not be enough time for him to draw back in for Friday’s matinee against the Chicago Blackhawks.

When questioned, coach Randy Carlyle sounded pretty optimistic that his young winger had enough rest. From The OC Register Ducks Blog:

“We felt it was best for him to not skate today…and we’ll see how he looks for tomorrow,” Coach Randy Carlyle said. “In all probability, we think he should be able to make a contribution (versus Chicago).”

Certainly not ominous news but Carlyle has been notorious in misleading local media and not disclosing his plan prior to game time. However, we do know that the recently-waived Matt Beleskey should take his spot on the top line should he not draw in.

Today’s game starts at 4PM EST, which is already after three games take the ice — meaning your rosters may be locked or accounted for and therefore unable to be optimized. We hope to get another update prior to puck drop but fantasy hockey owners may have to flip a coin on their lineup.
