Boston Bruins trade David Backes, pick to Anaheim Ducks for Ondrej Kase

The Boston Bruins have acquired forward Ondrej Kase from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward David Backes, prospect Axel Andersson, and a 2020 first-round draft pick.

The trade was first reported by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Kase, 24, was drafted by the Ducks in the seventh round of the 2014 NHL entry draft and has played his entire four-year career there. In 198 NHL games with Anaheim, he’s scored 43 goals and 53 assists for 96 points.

This year, Kase has scored seven goals and 23 points in 49 games. He has one year left on a deal that pays him $2.6-million and will be an RFA at the end of his contract.

Backes, meanwhile, has appeared in only 16 games this season scoring one goal and two assists. He 35-year-old veteran was placed on waivers by the Bruins on Jan. 17 and was set to be assigned to the minors, however, he never appeared in any games for their AHL affiliate.

The B’s will retain 25% of Backes’ contract, which still has one year left at a cap hit of $6-million.

In Andersson, the Ducks get the Bruins 2018 2nd round draft pick who has spent time developing in Allsvenskan before jumping to the QMJHL this year. In 41 games with the Moncton Wildcats, he’s scored two goals and another 20 assists.
