Boucher Injured, Backlund To Start Season With Flyers

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said yesterday that due an injury to Brian Boucher, Johan Backlund will start the season as the Flyers’ backup to goaltender Ray Emery. Boucher was injured in the first period of the Flyers 1-0 preseason loss in New Jersey on Saturday. The team is calling it a lower-body injury and Boucher is expected to be out a week to ten days.

Backlund played in the Swedish Elite League last season, so the Flyers start the season with two goaltenders that did not play in the NHL last season. This shouldn’t be a cause for concern as Emery has had an exceptional preseason recording a 1.76 GAA and .944 save percentage.
