The Pittsburgh Penguins’ goalie nightmare continues, as Casey DeSmith will be out for a little bit longer in their series against the New York Rangers, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

DeSmith was injured in Game 1 against the Rangers midway through the second overtime period, as he hurt his groin while making a save, and left the game. He was replaced by Louis Domingue, who turned aside all 17 shots to help the Penguins to the win in triple overtime. Domingue will get the start in Game 2, with Alex D’Orio backing up.

DeSmith had an 11-6-5 record in 26 games for the Penguins this season with a .914 save percentage and three shutouts. Game 1 was the first playoff game of his career.

Domingue got into two games during the regular season this year for the Pens, winning one of them, and he had a .952 save percentage in those games. He also had a .924 save percentage in 22 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL. D’Orio has yet to play in the NHL, but split time with the AHL Penguins and the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL, with a .894 save percentage in the AHL and .865 save percentage in the ECHL.

The reason DeSmith was playing Game 1 at all was due to a foot fracture suffered by starting goaltender Tristan Jarry. Jarry is now out of a walking boot and rehabbing his foot, and may potentially return later in the series. Jarry had a 34-18-6 record with the Penguins this season in 58 games, as well as a .919 save percentage and four shutouts.
