Daily Faceoff Morning Report — 11/02/22

The Daily Faceoff Morning Report will be released on weekdays, recapping the key news and events from the day before.

We will highlight injuries affecting today’s games, hot streaks, cold streaks, and anything relevant for everyone from the casual hockey fan to the Fantasy Hockey grinder.

Tampa holds on in wild finish to beat Ottawa

Despite going 1-for-8 on the power-play and giving up a shorthanded goal on a 5-on-3, the Lightning won for the fourth time in five games. Brayden Point tied the game up with 7:05 left in the third period, and Nikita Kucherov scored the eventual game-winner at 17:30. The Lightning top line did most of the damage as Kucherov finished with three points (1G/2A), and Point had a goal and assist. With the Senators net empty, Brady Tkachuk had a breakaway with seconds left to send the game to overtime but missed high.

Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman was held out of the game due to an upper-body injury. Consider him questionable for Thursday’s game vs. the Hurricanes.

Shesterkin blanks the Flyers in goaltending battle

Igor Shesterkin stopped all 19 shots he faced in the Rangers’ 1-0 overtime win over the Flyers on Tuesday. Shesterkin made some massive saves late in the game to keep the clean sheet before Chris Kreider ended it in overtime with his fourth goal of the season.

Carter Hart continued his incredible play, stopping 35 of 36 shots in the loss. It was his second straight loss, but Hart ranks fourth in the NHL with a .943 SV% through seven games.

Eichel propels Vegas to their fifth-straight win

Jack Eichel scored the Golden Knights’ opening goal (5) on a first-period power-play and assisted on the Shea Theodore overtime game-winner as Vegas took down the Capitals 3-2. Eichel is now tied for 15th in league scoring with 12 points (5G/7A) in 11 games. Charlie Lindgren stood tall in the Capitals’ net, but it wasn’t enough, as they lost in the extra frame for the second straight night.

Washington was missing John Carlson (lower-body) for the second straight game, and he’s questionable to play Thursday in Detroit.

Surging Wild beat Canadiens for the second time in a week

Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves as the Wild won for the fourth time in five games, beating the Canadiens 4-1. Kirill Kaprizov scored twice (7,8), and Matt Boldy tallied an empty-netter to give him six goals in 10 games. 2020 No.9 overall pick Marco Rossi picked up his first career point, assisting on Kaprizov’s second-period goal.

It was a quiet night for the Canadiens’ top guns as they moved to 5-5-0 on the season. Jake Allen stopped 27 of 30 shots in defeat.

Bruins rally to win in overtime

Sidney Crosby scored just 30 seconds into the game, foreshadowing the fireworks that would come in the Bruins’ 6-5 OT win. The Penguins’ top-6 was on fire, as Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Rickard Rakell, and Bryan Rust each had goals. The Penguins led 5-2 midway through the second period before a Brad Marchand PPG cut the lead to two. Boston would make it a one-goal game 12 minutes into the third and tie it up on a Taylor Hall goal with just over a minute to go.

Boston was able to kill off a 4-on-3 penalty in overtime before Hampus Lindholm would cap off the comeback with his third goal of the season and fourth point of the night (1G/3A). Tomas Nosek was the only Bruins’ forward not to record a point in the game.

Linus Ullmark unconventionally won his seventh straight game. He was pulled from the game and replaced by Jeremy Swayman but returned to the crease after Swayman suffered a lower-body injury in a collision with Patrice Bergeron.

Swayman could not put any weight on the leg as he left the ice, and the Bruins did not comment on his status post-game.

Sorokin helps Islanders pick up a fourth straight

Ilya Sorokin was his usual dominant self on Wednesday, stopping 21 of 22 shots (.955 SV%) for his third straight win as the Islanders topped the Blackhawks 3-1. Brock Nelson was the lone islander to finish with multiple points after scoring the game-winning goal (4) and adding an assist. He’s continued his hot finish to the season last year with 11 points in his first 10 games this season. Anders Lee (5) and Zach Parise (4) had the other Islanders’ goals in the victory. Arvid Soderblom replaced the injured Alex Stalock in the first period and had a second straight impressive performance as he stopped 28 of 30 shots (.933 SV%) while getting little help on the offensive end. Jonathan Toews continued his resurgent comeback after a down season in 2021-22, scoring the lone Blackhawk goal (6) to reach eight points in 10 games this year.

Hughes and Devils stay hot as New Jersey tops Vancouver

Jack Hughes had a goal (4) and an assist Tuesday to get to a point per game through 10 games, as New Jersey easily handled Vancouver 5-2 on the road. Entering Tuesday, the Devils led the NHL in shots per game (39.3), meaning Thatcher Demko had his work cut out for him. Unfortunately, he failed to step up for the Canucks, allowing four goals on 36 shots (.889 SV%) as he picked up his NHL-leading sixth loss of the season (1-6-1). Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 21 of 23 shots (.913 SV%) while Nico Hischier (5), Michael McLeod (1), Dawson Mercer (4) and Yegor Sharangovich (3) all had the Devils’ goals in the win. In his first game since taking over for the injured Jake Oettinger, Scott Wedgewood earned his first win of the year (1-2-1), stopping 30 of 32 shots as Dallas beat Los Angeles 5-2 at home. Roope Hintz had a pair of goals (4,5) and an assist to bring his season totals to an impressive 12 points (4G/8A) in 10 games. Jason Robertson joined Hintz in the three-point club, posting a goal (5) and two assists along with six SOG to continue his hot start to 2022-23, posting 13 points (5G/8A) in 10 games after missing all of the preseason due to contract negotiations. Miro Heiskanen returned from injury to collect two assists, while Jamie Benn joined him with two assists and a game-high seven SOG. Cal Petersen’s struggles continued, allowing five goals on 40 shots (.875 SV%) in his fifth start of the season. He’s now 3-2-0 with an ugly 4.30 GAA and .868 SV%. Kevin Fiala (3) and Arthur Kaliyev (4) each scored for the Kings in the loss.

Kraken strike back with three third-period goals to stun Flames

Joey Daccord stopped 36 of 40 shots (.900 SV%) to earn his second career win in 15 NHL games as Seattle stunned Calgary 5-4 on the back of three third-period goals. Carson Soucy (1), Morgan Geekie (3), Daniel Sprong (2), Yanni Gourde (1) and Matty Beniers (5) each had goals as the Kraken spread out their scoring. Oliver Bjorkstrand was the only Kraken skater to finish with multiple points (2A). Daniel Vladar struggled for a second straight start, allowing five goals on 21 shots (.808 SV%) in the loss. The Flames’ scoring was led by their second line, as Tyler Toffoli had a goal (4) and an assist, and Elias Lindholm tallied two assists.

Oilers dominate Predators to win their fifth straight

Jack Campbell continued to struggle but win games as he earned his second straight victory with a save percentage below .861 SV% stopping 19 of 23 shots (.826 SV%) as the Oilers beat the Predators 7-4. Evander Kane fueled the Oilers’ victory with a hat-trick (3,4,5) off a team-leading eight SOG, while Leon Draisaitl led all skaters with five points (1G/4A) to bring his early season totals to an impressive 21 points (5G/16A) in 10 games played.

Connor McDavid continued his Gretzky-like season, scoring two goals (10,11) with two assists to bring his NHL lead in points to 22 points (11 G/11A) in 10 games. Juuse Saros struggled with Edmonton’s stars all night, allowing a season-high six goals on 36 shots (.833 SV%) as he earned his third loss in four starts. Filip Forsberg had a goal (3) and two assists to lead the Predators, while Roman Josi, Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene each enjoyed multi-point performances with two assists each.

Karlsson’s hat trick not enough as Ducks top Sharks in high-scoring affair

Anthony Stolarz picked up his first win of the season, stopping 39 of 44 shots (.886 SV%) as the Anaheim Ducks topped San Jose 6-5 in a shootout. Erik Karlsson moved to second in the NHL in goals after scoring a hat-trick (7,8,9) and adding an assist to pad his lead for points among defensemen to 15 points (9G/6A) in 12 games. Adam Henrique got the monkey on his back, scoring his first two goals (1,2) of the season, while Troy Terry added two assists to bring his team lead in points to 12 (4G/8A) in 10 games.
