Lightning vs Islanders | OddsShark Matchup Report

Opening NHL Odds: Lightning -143 Favorites

The Islanders will try to even up the NHL’s Eastern Conference Final against the Lightning at 2-2 in Game 4 on Sunday following an inspired effort in Game 3 on Friday. New York defeated Tampa Bay 5-3 as a +110 underdog, coming through late in the third period to pull off the victory. Brock Nelson scored his eighth goal of the postseason at the 16:35 mark of the third and then Jean-Gabriel Pageau added an empty-netter three minutes later to provide the final margin.

The empty-netter had more meaning than usual too because Nikita Kucherov of the Lightning slashed Pageau in an attempt to prevent the score, igniting a fight between the two teams. That may have been just what the Islanders needed to get back into this series, as it will be interesting to see if the end of Game 3 carries over into Game 4.

Tampa Bay did play without Alex Killorn (one-game suspension for boarding) and leading scorer Brayden Point (injury), but the team will get at least one of them back here. The Lightning saw their six-game winning streak end with the loss, with goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy allowing two goals or less in the previous five. New York saw goalie Semyon Varlamov turn in his second consecutive solid performance to keep his team in the game, stopping 34 of 37 shots.

The Islanders have now won four of their last six games as underdogs after losing seven in a row under that scenario. Of course the two losses during that stretch were in the first two games of this series.
