Devil Down: Deadline passes, team under cap (updated)

UPDATED: Tom Gulliti of The Record assumes the New Jersey Devils will sneak under the cap and play with a 20 man roster after officially placing Anssi Salmela and Bryce Salvador on waivers.  Adam Mair remains at practice despite not having a contract.

With only a few minutes until the Wednesday 3pm ET deadline, the New Jersey Devils need to get under the salary cap.  The team has trimmed the roster down to 28 players (15 forwards, 10 defensemen, and 3 goalies); keeping in mind Anssi Salmela and Bryce Salvador are both on the Long Term Injury Reserve.

Or so everyone thought.

Late this afternoon, the Devils sent down Mike McKenna to Albany along with Jacob Josefson, Mattias Tedenby, Matt Corrente and the team waived Rob Davison.  The key thing to remember is that Adam Mair is on a professional tryout and is not under contract.  As it stands now, the Devils will be down to 23 players and one unsigned player. Therefore some moves will still have to be executed to get the team under the salary cap.

It is a bit difficult to fully ascertain line combos.  However, it is safe to say that this one is etched in stone for now.

Parise- Zajac-Kovalchuk

After that there is uncertainty.  From a fantasy point, if this line stays intact, each one of these guys are no brainers to draft.  Travis Zajac gets bumped into that point-a-game realm almost by default.

After that, one really must be careful when assessing Devils players, even with the reunited Patrik Elias – Jason Arnott combination.  Andy Greene is a viable fantasy option for defensemen but the rest of the defensive corps cannot yet be trusted.

Stay tuned as there will be more fantasy advice coming as the lines become set.
