Edmonton Oilers place Souray & Gerber on waivers

According to NHL.com, the Edmonton Oilers placed both Sheldon Souray and Martin Gerbers on waivers today.

The Souray move comes as no surprise as team GM Steve Tambellini attempted to trade the veteran defenseman during the offseason before not allowing him to return for training camp.  With a rocket of a shot, he could probably help some team on the powerplay but few teams have the room to acquire such an albatross contract.

Gerber signed during the offseason mostly because of Nikolai Khabibulin.  Last season, the Oilers significantly lacked depth between the pipes and felt a veteran would help their cause.  With Khabibulin sharp and Devan Dubnyk/Jeff Deslauriers battling for a backup position, Gerber was expendable.

If last year’s worst team in the League found no use for these players, you should probably hold off adding them to your team.
