Hockey Canada names candidate list for new board of directors

Hockey Canada has announced the nine nominees for its new Board of Directors. The former board stepped down in October due to the fallout from its bunged handling of sexual assault allegations. Working with a monster candidate list of more than 550 candidates, the Independent Nominating Committee selected the nominees with help from executive search firm Korn Ferry. The nine nominees come from diverse backgrounds with the hope of leading Hockey Canada in a better direction to ensure safety and inclusiveness within the organization.

“We are grateful to the more than 550 candidates who applied to help guide the change at Hockey Canada,” said Michael Bruni, chair of the nominating committee.”The nominees we’ve put forward represent the very best of Canadian society: bringing together the knowledge and experience necessary to create a new era in hockey that focuses on governance and cultural evolution.” The potential candidate list is as follows: The Hon. Hugh L. Fraser (Chair), Grant Borbridge, Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Julie Duranceau, Dave Evans, Marni Fullerton, Jonathan F. Goldbloom, Marian Jacko, and Andrea Poole.

Cassie Campbell-Pascall, 49, leads the nominees as the most recognizable among the potential group. Throughout her playing career she won eight world championships and three gold medals donning the Canadian jersey. She is currently seen on television as a broadcaster with Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada. Her husband, Brad Pascall is presently an assistant general manager with the Calgary Flames.

Another notable name, The Hon. Hugh L. Fraser has been nominated as the board chair. The retired Ontario Court of Justice judge is the father of former NHLer Mark Fraser who played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and New Jersey Devils. He served on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and is the commissioner for Athletics Canada. He is one of 15 adjudicators with the NCAA’s resolution panel and is an independent arbitrator with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. He also sat on the board of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports.

Hockey Canada’s new board of directors will serve a one-year term. The organization will hold a vote Saturday. The entire candidate slate includes five women and four men.
