Guentzel, who underwent off-season ankle surgery, continues to be a full participant in practice and could play in the season opener for the Penguins. Last season, he scored 73 points (36G / 37A) in 78 games and would be a major boost for a Penguins team that is coming off missing the playoffs for the first time in 17 years. If Guentzel is able to suit up, expect him to take his familiar role alongside Sidney Crosby on the top line and top powerplay unit.

Phillips was poised to make the Blackhawks for opening night but has been assigned to the Rockford IceHogs (AHL) for the start of the 2023-24 campaign. The 22-year-old was Chicago's 2020 fifth-round pick (141st overall) and had a goal, four assists, five PIMs, and a -10 plus/minus in a short 16-game showing in 2022-23. He returns to Rockford where he also had six goals and 23 assists in 51 games last season.

Willman played in nine games for Philadelphia in 2022-23 and failed to pick up a point but had nine SOG, four PIMs, and a -3 plus/minus and has officially signed a one-year, two-way deal with New Jersey. The 28-year-old centre has appeared in 50 games for the Flyers over the last two seasons since making his debut in 2021-22 and has four goals, six points, and 16 PIMs on his career. He is expected to start the season with New Jersey's AHL affiliate in Utica.

Norlinder was making a strong case to crack Montreal's top-six defense to enter the season but was informed Monday that he is being loaned to Laval (AHL) to start the 2023-24 season. The 23-year-old defenseman was the Canadiens 2019 third-round pick (64th overall) and will return to Laval where he had two goals, 17 assists, 20 PIMs, and a -7 plus/minus in 67 games in 2022-23.

Heineman was fighting for a final spot on Montreal's opening night roster but unfortunately has been informed Monday that he will be returned to Laval (AHL) on loan for the start of the 2023-24 season. The 21-year-old winger was drafted by Montreal in the second round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft (43rd overall) and has yet to make his NHL debut. He returns to Laval where he had seven goals, two assists, six PIMs, and a +5 plus/minus in a short, yet impressive 11-game debut in 2022-23.

Gurianov, the former 12th overall pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, has failed to make the opening night roster for the Predators. Last season, Gurianov recorded only 17 points (7G / 10A) in 66 games between the Stars and Montreal Canadiens. He will likely see some NHL action this season but his effectiveness at the NHL level remains to be seen as his goal totals have decreased each year since the 20 he scored in his rookie campaign in 2019-20.

Murray was placed on long-term injured-reserve back when first eligible on July 26th and is now expected to miss a minimum of 6-8 months after undergoing successful bilateral hip surgery. It is tough news for the 29-year-old who hasn't played since April 2023. In 2022-23 he had a 14-8-2 record with a .903 SV% and a 3.01 GAA in his first season with the Maple Leafs.

McLeod has missed time throughout training camp but is expected to play Wednesday vs. the Canucks. McLeod, who had 11 goals and 12 assists (23 points) in 57 games a season ago, should serve as Edmonton's third line centre with Warren Foegele and Dylan Holloway on his wings.

Ekholm practiced on Friday but said he can't say for sure that he'll be ready for opening night and that the injury has taken longer to heal that he originally thought. Philip Broberg will likely suit up if Ekholm can't play against the Canucks on Wednesday.

Edvinsson made his NHL debut last season, tallying two points (2G / 0A) in nine games with the Red Wings but will begin this year's campaign in the AHL. The former sixth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft will likely see some time in the NHL this season but, barring any injuries, is unlikely to be a regular in the lineup.

The 6'6 Swedish power-forward opened last season with the Red Wings, recording eight points (5G / 3A) in 21 games before playing the remainder of his season in the AHL. Soderblom will look to continue his growth and further adapt to the North American game as he begins his season with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

After an impressive first year in North America, scoring 64 points (21G / 43A) in 70 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL, Berggren became a regular in the lineup for the Red Wings last season where he recorded 28 points (15G / 13A) in 67 games. The talented winger will begin his campaign in the AHL but will likely make his way into the Red Wings roster at some point this season.

Faksa took a hard hit along the boards during last Tuesday's preseason game and had to get stitches on his face. He was not in concussion protocol, so there's a good chance that Dallas' fourth-line centre is available for opening night.

Johnston had a "little bit of a procedure," according to head coach Pete DeBoer. The Stars will be forced to shuffle their lineup around and Craig Smith will likely dress if Johnston isn't able to play on Thursday.

Hintz practiced with the team for the first two days of training camp but hasn't been with the team recently due to an upper-body injury. He's been skating on his own and head coach Pete DeBoer is still optimistic that Hintz will be ready for Game 1. His availability for practice this week will be a good indication of if he'll play vs. the Blues or not.

Despite having an impressive preseason, recording five points (2G / 3A) in six games, a logjam of offensive talent on the Dallas Stars' roster has prevented Stankoven from cracking the opening night roster. Stankoven will likely see some time in the NHL this year but as he awaits his callup, the Stars' top prospect should see top-line minutes playing with the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Bourque had a successful first year of professional hockey last season, scoring 47 points (20G / 27A) in 70 games with the Texas Stars (AHL). The 30th overall pick from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft has yet to make his NHL debut and will have to continue waiting as he begins this season in the AHL. Bourque is a high-end prospect for the Stars and could see some time in the NHL this season.

Head coach Rod Brind'Amour called it a "not serious shoulder injury," but it's still expected to sideline him for at least on week. The 2019 No.28 overall pick has yet to make his NHL debut, but had 32 points (13G / 19A) in 50 AHL games a season ago.

Francouz has been placed on the injured reserve as he continues to recover from a groin injury. Francouz battled injuries last season as well, recording a 2.61 GAA and .915 SV% while playing in only 16 games (8-7-1). Justus Annunen will serve as the backup to Alexandar Georgiev to start the season as Francouz's timeline for return remains uncertain.

Pelletier is expected to be out long-term after undergoing shoulder surgery. Last season he made his NHL debut, recording seven points (3G / 4A) in 24 games for the Flames. In his absence, Dryden Hunt is expected to make the opening-night roster and center the 4th line for Calgary.
