The Red Wings have acquired Marc Staal and a 2021 2nd round pick in from the Rangers in exchange for future considerations.

Staal has one-year left on his contract that carries a $5.7M cap-hit. The Rangers gave up a second-round pick to Detroit to take that deal off of their books, clearing cap-space to get RFA's like Ryan Strome, Brendan Lemieux, Tony DeAngelo and Alexandar Georgiev under contract. Staal comes into Detroit to help replace Jonathan Ericsson and Trevor Daley, who the Red Wings announced they will not be bringing back. The 33-year-old had 11 points (2G / 9A) in 52 games in 2020.

The Red Wings have signed Sam Gagner to a one-year, $850k contract extension.

Gagner was acquired midseason from the Oilers as a part of the Andreas Athanasiou deal and he scored one goal in six games. The veteran won't be a fantasy asset in 2021 but will help be a mentor in the room, play a bottom-6 role and see some power-play time.

The Canadiens have signed Joseph Blandisi to a one-year, two-way contract extension ($700k/325k).

Blandisi started last season with the Penguins but was dealt to the Canadiens in a minor league swap in mid-February. Montreal didn't get much of a look at Blandisi before the season was paused but he registered four points (1G / 3A) in four AHL games and that was enough to get a one-year extension. The 26-year-old has 10 goals and 21 assists (31 points) in 101 career NHL games with the Devils, Ducks and Penguins.

The Canadiens have signed Jeff Petey to a four-year, $25 million ($6.25 million AAV) contract extension.

Petry had one-year left on his six-year, $33M contract that he signed in 2015 but earned a fresh four-year extension and got a $750K AAV raise. Petry has recorded three-straight seasons of at last 40 points and has not missed a game over that stretch.

The Flyers have signed Alex Lyon to a one-year, $700k contract extension.

Lyon spent most of 2020 in the AHL going 11-14-5 with a 2.69 GAA and .913 SV%. With Brian Elliott set to become a UFA, it looks like the Flyers plan to have Lyon as Carter Hart's backup in 2021. The 27-year-old is 5-4-1 with a 3.15 GAA and .893 SV% in 16 career NHL games.

Alex Lyon
The Senators have bought out the final two years of Bobby Ryan's contract.

Ryan had two-years left on a seven-year deal that carried a $7.25M AAV cap-hit. The buyout will cost Ottawa just over $3.5M over the next two seasons and $1.83M in 2023 and 2024. Ryan had just five goals with three assists (eight points) in 24 games this past season but there is a good chance he will be brought in on a low-cost, incentive driven contract, similar to what Corey Perry got from the Dallas Stars.

Bobby Ryan
The Sabres have signed Curtis Lazar to a two-year, $1.6 million ($800k AAV) contract extension.

Lazar split his 2020 season between the AHL and NHL, totalling 10 points (5G / 5A) in 38 games with the Sabres. Lazar has never lived up to the hype of being a top-20 draft pick but he seems to have settled in in the Sabres' bottom-6. Expect him to centre the third or fourth line behind Jack Eichel and Eric Staal in 2021.

Curtis Lazar
The Penguins have acquired Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour from the Panthers in exchange for Patric Hornqvist.

Sceviour is 31-years-old and has one-year left on a deal that pays him $1.2 million. With so many high-priced assets up-and-down the Penguins lineup, Sceviour is a cheap option to replace Patrick Marleau in their bottom-6 in 2021. With a career-high of 26 points, Sceviour's ceiling is quite low but he's a hard-working winger that will likely be reunited with his former Panthers' teammate Jared McCann.

Colton Sceviour
The Penguins have acquired Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour from the Panthers in exchange for Patric Hornqvist.

Matheson has a massive contract, with six years left at $4.875M but the 26-year-old was brought in to replace Justin Schultz, who is a UFA. Matheson has tremendous mobility for a 6-foot-2 defenseman and heads to Pittsburgh with at least eight goals and 20 points in three consecutive seasons. Matheson fell out of favour in Florida in 2020 but should be a fine second or third pairing defenseman in Pittsburgh.

Mike Matheson
The Panthers have acquired Patric Hornqvist from the Penguins in exchange for Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour.

Hornqvist has three years left on his current deal that pays him $5.3M AAV. At 33-years-old, Hornqvist isn't as effective as he once was and injuries have become a major issue for the wing. Over his last four seasons in Pittsburgh, Hornqvist has missed 54 of the 315 games (17.1%) but was sixth on the team in points-per-game, registering 162 points (85G / 77A) in 261 games. In Florida, he will likely slot-in one the first or second line and on the top power-play.

Patric Hornqvist
The Predators have signed Yakov Trenin to a two-year, $1.45 million ($725K AAV) contract extension.

Trenin closed out the 2020 season with the Predators after spending much of the year in the AHL. During his time with the Predators, he scored two goals with four assists (six points) in 21 games. He was tied for third on the Milwaukee Admirals in scoring with 20 goals despite playing just 32 AHL contests before being called-up. Trenin will likely factor in on the Predators' third or fourth line in 2021.
