The New York Rangers and center Derek Stepan have reached an agreement on a two-year contract. Terms were not disclosed, but reports indicate it pays Stepan $6.15 million.

Stepan, who was a restricted free agent, had been sitting out training camp as contract negotiations with the Rangers were ongoing. He led the Rangers in scoring last season with 26 assists, 44 points and a plus-25 rating in 48 games. Stepan, 23, has not missed a game in three seasons with the Rangers. He has 140 points on 56 goals and 84 assists in 212 games.

The Sabres' Joel Armia, one of the former first-round picks competing for a roster spot, has a broken hand and is out indefinitely.

The right winger took a slash during Wednesday's 3-0 victory over Columbus and was unable to finish the game. X-rays revealed the break, coach Ron Rolston said today. It hasn't been determined whether Armia will need surgery or if the injury will heal on its own.

Sharks forward Raffi Torres underwent surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee Thursday morning, taking a player who helped San Jose turn its season around last spring out of the lineup for months.

General Manager Doug Wilson would not offer an estimate as to how many games Torres would miss but recovery from the procedure he underwent usually takes from three to five months. That could push Torres's return until after the NHL's break for the 2014 Winter Olympics in mid-February.

Jaromir Jagr will not play in tonight's exhibition. He says he is healthy and would play if it was a regular season game but feels no reason to risk re-injury.

Jagr will be good to go for the Devils' season opener on October 3rd. Even at 41, he still has the ability to score 25 goals this season.

The Buffalo Sabres signed defenseman Nikita Zadorov to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The Sabres selected the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Russian defenseman with the 16th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. Zadorov, 18, has played in three exhibition games so far this season and recorded his first career goal in the game against Toronto on Sunday. “I think it’s great. It’s a big experience for me to play here in NHL exhibition games,” Zadorov told Sabres.com. “I’ve played three games and I think I did a pretty good job. I just want to try and make the team.”

Joakim Nordstrom making his case for a Blackhawks roster spot.

“He’s had a good camp,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “I like his speed. For a young guy, he’s got good instincts both sides of the puck. I thought he did a good job penalty killing in the situations he’s been in. " The Hawks are still looking for someone to replace Michael Frolik as Marcus Kruger’s penalty-killing partner. Nordstrom, a third-round pick in the 2010 draft, killed penalties in the Swedish Elite League for two years before joining Rockford for 11 games last season.

Horton had surgery in July, shortly after he left the Boston Bruins to sign with the Blue Jackets as a free agent. “I’m at nine weeks now,” Horton said. “Ten weeks is when I pick it up a little more in terms of the rehab, and that’s when I expect to start to see progress. But it’s four months before the bone is fully healed. So I’ve got a while yet. I have to stay patient.”

Horton can’t start skating, he said, until four months after the surgery, which would be mid-November. The club won’t put a timeline on his return, but it’s expected in December or January. If you have an IR spot in your league it might not be a bad idea to stash the six-time 20 goal scorer.

With just five days left before the opening of the season, Cody Franson has agreed to a one year, $2 million dollar deal, and is expected on the ice at practice Thursday morning.

It’s likely the Leafs blueline pairings are now set, with Franson expected to be reunited with Mark Fraser, a pairing that stuck all of last season. The 26-year-old set a career high scoring four goals with 25 assists (29 points) in 44 games last year.

Tomas Hertl is impressing the Sharks in his attempt to make the team. The rookie took two big steps toward a spot on the Sharks roster when the NHL season begins Oct. 3 (2 goals vs. Van last night). Still, Todd McLellan wasn't ready to punch Hertl's ticket to the NHL just yet. Asked about his play, the coach said "he did a very good job again.

At 6-foot-2 and 210 lbs., Hertl is a great skater who is not afraid to go to the dirty areas and put the puck in the net. Skating on a line with Joe Thornton and Brent Burns all preseason Hertl has scored three goals with one assist and is a plus-3 in three games. Should he make the roster and stick in the San Jose top-six, he will become fantasy relevant. Keep his name in mind towards the end of your draft.

After signing a one-year, $2 million deal with the Ducks this past summer, Penner was handed a golden opportunity when camp started. Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau gave him the chance to be reunited on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, a trio that was key in Anaheim’s 2007 Cup triumph. But Penner needs to show that he belongs there.

"He’ll never have a greater opportunity to play with players of the caliber of Ryan and Corey. It’s all up to him,” Boudreau said. "We want it to work. But in the end, he’s going to have to be the one that produces and shows that he deserves to be on that line." Penner found himself on a line with Matt Beleskey and Rickard Rakell this morning which suggests that his time with Perry and Getzlaf may be over.

Erik Gudbranson has yet to translate his offensive production from junior into the NHL. He has missed 26 games in his first two NHL seasons scoring just two goals and 10 assists in 104 games.

For what it is worth, through three preseason games the 2010 third overall pick has three goals and three assists. He is currently tied with PK Subban and Dennis Wideman for the most points by a defenseman. Gudbranson could finally be ready for a breakout season.

Right wing Jaromir Jagr said he “probably” won’t play in the team’s preseason finale Thursday against Philadelphia, but believes he will be ready for the team’s regular season opener on Oct. 3 in Pittsburgh.

Jagr had hoped to take part in a full practice today, but Devils coach Pete DeBoer gave the team the day off, so he skated on his own instead. “The team had the day off, so I decided to skate on my own a little bit,” Jagr said before joking, “I couldn’t have more days off. That would be too many.”
