The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed right wing Jared Boll to a three-year contract extension through the 2016-17.

Boll has spent his entire professional career with the Blue Jackets, registering 24 goals and 28 assists for 52 points with 963 penalty minutes in 388 games.

Ryan Callahan, by his own admission, likely won’t be ready to play when the New York Rangers begin the 2013-14 regular season.

Callahan, the Rangers’ captain, is still going through rehabilitation after shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum this off-season. “To put a date on it or a timeframe it would be a guess," said Callahan. "I think once you start getting into contact then you have a better idea of when you’ll be back.” Although there is no timetable right now, Callahan is not expected to be out for an extended period of time.

Marty Havlat will not be ready by opening night, but Sharks general manager Doug Wilson expects the injured winger to return to the team at some point during the season after his offseason pelvic reconstruction surgery.

That timeline is currently unclear, but Wilson does expect Havlat's return to the Sharks to take place at some point.

The St. Louis Blues have agreed to terms on a seven-year deal with defenseman Alex Pietrangelo.

Pietrangelo, 23, dressed in 47 games last season, leading the Blues’ defense with 24 points (five goals and 19 assists) while ranking 13th in ice time per game (25:06) among all National Hockey League (NHL) defensemen. Since his first full season in 2010, Pietrangelo is tied for sixth among all defensemen in points (118), ranks 10th in goals (28), tied for ninth in assists (90) and slots 15th in plus/minus (+34) while he became the youngest defenseman in Blues history to record back-to-back 40-plus point seasons in 2010-11 (43) and 2011-12 (51).

Spezza is back to full-health in training camp. The 30-year-old played just five games last season before requiring back surgery for a herniated disc.

"I'm definitely 100 per cent right now, I feel really good," said Spezza. "I had a good off-season and it was nice to have a full summer of training and hopefully I can reap the rewards of it." Spezza is confident his back won't be a recurring issue, but says he will definitely be giving it greater attention.

From the moment Bobby Ryan was traded to Ottawa, fans of the Senators quickly started imagining how good he would look on a line beside Jason Spezza. The pair skated alongside Milan Michalek for the team's first day of on-ice training and already the buzz is building as to what the trio could accomplish. All three players offer a different skill set as Michalek has great speed, Spezza has great vision and Ryan can finish.

Ryan, 26, is a four-time thirty-goal scorer and offers Spezza a bona fide offensive right-winger for the first time since Dany Heatley, who had back-to-back 50-goal seasons playing with Spezza. Spezza said it will take time to get used to each other on the ice.

The Montreal Canadiens appear eager to give Danny Briere every opportunity to prove that he has plenty left in the tank after being bought out by the Philadelphia Flyers this summer. Early on, they’re giving him a look on the first line alongside David Desharnais and Max Pacioretty.

Briere, 35, signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Montreal, so the Canadiens would love to see him put it together after a tough couple seasons.

Washington’s big free agent signing isn’t in camp yet, and the club isn’t sure when he’ll be.

Mikhail Grabovski, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Caps after being bought out by the Leafs, is stuck in Toronto trying to sort out visa issues preventing him from joining his new team in Arlington, Va.

Silfverberg - Bonino - Selanne

Teemu Selanne, the NHL’s oldest player, opened camp alongside 22-year-old Jakob Silfverberg. Silfverberg, a Swedish winger acquired from Ottawa in the Bobby Ryan trade, acknowledged that it’s an honor to skate with a living legend. Playing with Selanne should certainly help Silfverberg's development this season, he has the potential for a breakout season.

It was only the first practice of the season, but the Flyers liked what they saw from new linemates Vincent Lecavalier and Wayne Simmonds.

Simmonds, who was one of Philly’s bright spots in an otherwise disappointing 2013 campaign, projects to open on the second line as Lecavalier’s winger, along with Brayden Schenn. It’s a nice fit for Lecavalier, a noted table-setter. Simmonds, who has scored at a 0.34 goals-per-game clip in each of the last two seasons, should be pushing for his first 30-goal campaign with Lecavalier in the middle.

Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley will miss three weeks after undergoing a procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

The 31-year-old Peverley might miss the first couple of games of the regular season. Dallas opens against Florida on Oct. 3. The Stars reported on their website that the issue was discovered during a physical Wednesday, and doctors decided to perform the procedure after more tests Thursday. Peverley can skate in the coming weeks but must avoid contact.

Raymond has a legitimate shot at making the Maple Leafs.

Raymond has a history with Leafs GM Dave Nonis. Despite Toronto’s precarious situation with the salary cap, the GM has vowed to do the necessary roster juggling to free up a spot if Raymond merits one. The 27-year-old left-winger became an unrestricted free agent for the first time and failed to land the multi-year deal he was looking for once the market opened on July 5. Raymond is a former 25-goal and 50-point player who will bring a lot of speed to the Maple Leafs roster, should he make it.

Brooks Laich — coming off an injury-ruined season — left the ice after just 10 minutes, saying he had a "flare-up" of a strained hip flexor suffered a week ago on his first day in Washington after a summer of successful rehab of a pulled groin.

Laich, one of the Capitals' locker room leaders, was anxious for the start of camp after playing only nine games last year. Laich's status is day-to-day. Neither general manager George McPhee nor coach Adam Oates sounded particularly concerned. Laich could be a sleeper this year as long as he can stay on the ice. He had close to 50 points for four straight seasons between 2008-2012.

The Canes, looking to fill the void left by injured defenseman Joni Pitkanen, signed free-agent defenseman Ron Hainsey on Thursday. General manager Jim Rutherford said Hainsey would receive a one-year, $2 million contract.

He played 47 games for the Jets last season, with no goals and 13 assists. He led Winnipeg in blocked shots (123).

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss the entire 2013-14 season.

Pitkanen, suffered a broken left calcaneus (heel) bone on April 2 against Washington, and missed the Hurricanes’ final 13 games of the season. The 2013-14 season would have been his sixth with Carolina and 10th in the NHL. He has scored 57 goals and earned 225 assists in 535 career NHL regular-season games with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Carolina, since beginning his NHL career in 2003-04.

The Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday night that the team has re-signed forward Cody Hodgson to a long-term multi-year contract extension. The 23-year-old Hodgson came into training camp as a restricted free agent.

Hodgson appeared in all 48 games in 2012-13, finishing second among all Sabres skaters with 15 goals and 34 points. In parts of four NHL seasons, he has appeared in 139 games between the Sabres and Vancouver Canucks, tallying 77 points (35G and 42 A).

Cody Hodgson
Nazem Kadri and the Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with $5.8 million.

Kadri signs the deal a day before training camp is set to open up. The 22-year-old forward scored 18 goals and added 26 assists (44 points) in 48 games last season. This was Kadri's first full NHL season so a 0.92 points-per-game is likely the reason these contract negotiations lasted so long. He enters the season as the Maple Leafs number 2 center, but will likely be the most valuable fantasy center on this roster.

Nazem Kadri
When the Philadelphia Flyers get their Chris Pronger LTIR cap relief at the end of the month, forward Dan Cleary will join the team.

Helene St. James reports it’s a cap hit of $2.75 million per season. The 34-year-old had nine goals and six assists in 48 games last season. He also added 10 points in 14 playoff games.

Danny Cleary
The Ottawa Senators signed left-winger Colin Greening to a three-year contract extension on Monday. The 27-year-old was set to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2013-'14 season. Greening will make $2 million in 2014-15, $2.75 million in 2015-16 and $3.2 million in 2016-17.

Greening had eight goals and 11 assists with Ottawa in the lockout-shortened 2013 campaign. He added three goals and an assist in 10 playoff games. The six-foot-two, 217-pound Greening has 31 goals and 38 assists in 153 career NHL games.
