Luongo will be making his 25th career start against the Penguins tonight and he'll be looking to improve his 13-8-1 career record against the flightless birds. He also has a career 2.78 GAA and .911 save percentage along with four shutouts versus Pittsburgh.

He was on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision in his last start against the Pens, however, back on November 17, 2010 in the lone meeting between Vancouver and Pittsburgh last season. He gave up three goals on 29 shots that night for the loss. [VancouverCanucks.com]

At this point consider Niemi close to fully healthy, ready to start the season as the Sharks' starting goalie. Last season, Niemi won 35 games while sporting a 2.38 GAA and .920 SV%. With Antero Niittymaki already out, the two options for the Sharks would be Thomas Greiss or Harri Sateri if Niemi suffers a setback.

Trotz said that Rinne would play tomorrow night in the season-opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets

Rinne has a bit of the flu but should still be fine for the season opener. Through 14 career starts against the Blue Jackets, Rinne posted a 9-4-0 record with a respectable 2.43 GAA, .915 SV% and one shutout.

Orpik is not expected to start the season opener after sitting out all preseason. Orpik's health should lead to keeping the puck away from Marc-Andre Fleury. Good to know whether he is in the lineup or not since his 9 career goals in 512 career games won't help your squad too much.

The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, the team's first round draft pick (14th overall) in 2011, to a three-year entry-level contract.

Last season the 14th overall pick scored four goals and 13 points in 38 games for Northeastern University. He left college this past offseason to play for the Saginaw Spirit. Expect him to make the big club within a season or two.

FRISCO -- Adam Burish (groin) practiced with the team this morning in Frisco, but his status for Friday's season opener against Chicago remains up in the air at this point.

Sounds doubtful for the opener. Burish was an incredibly valuable player to the Stars last season despite only eight goals and 14 points. They will continue to take it easy on him when the games don't matter. While he plays a bruising style on the ice, his PIM do not translate to fantasy hockey as he only registered 91 and 107 respectively over the past two seasons.

No word on his short-term role with the club. Strome impressed last season in the OHL, scoring 33 goals and 106 points. His excellent season led many to believe he could be this season's Jeff Skinner. Keep an eye on where Strome lands.

And general manager George McPhee hopes the same is true with winger Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Caps' 2010 first-round pick at No. 26 overall.

Kuznetsov established himself as one of the premier prospects in all of hockey last season during his WJHC tournament. Last season he scored 17 goals and 15 assists in 44 games. Expect him to cross the pond next season and keep an eye out for him in keeper leagues as he could eventually replace Alexander Semin.

Although there's a provision in Mattias Sjogren's contract that would allow him to go back to Sweden, McPhee says he doesn't expect him to.

The 23-year-old pivot played for Farjestads BK Karlstad of the SEL last season and could have signed with any team this past offseason but chose the Capitals. He should be one of the team's first callups.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
