"He's shaken but I think he's gonna be OK," Ruff said of Kaleta. "He got a little bit of a shot to the head there. Whether Van leaned in too much or Patty came in with too much momentum, you don't want anybody hurt in practice."

Over his four professional seasons, Kaleta failed to play more than 55 games. The 25-year-old recently committed himself to staying healthy but likely misses some time following this practice incident. Expect similar games played along with close to 100 PIM and up to 15 points for the season.

Doesn't sound like anything serious but Neuvirth battled injuries all last season. While the Caps started him 45 times last season, they are expected to cut his workload in half this season. At this point he is only valuable to Tomas Vokoun owners or leagues that value backups.

Holtby will temporarily fill in for Michal Neuvirth. If he plays, expect an impressive outing as the 22-year-old posted a 1.79 GAA and .923 SV%. Certainly a player to watch in the long term.

Blues center Jason Arnott expected to miss a week after having cataract removed from right eye #stlblues

With Arnott out of the lineup, look for Vladimir Sobotka to take his spot on the third line. Last season, Arnott scored 17 goals and 31 points over 73 games between the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. At this point in his career, the 36-year-old pivot is clearly on the decline.

The Predators’ rookie will play his first game in Bridgestone Arena this evening. It will give Nashville fans their first chance to see Smith, the Predators’ top forward prospect. And Nashville Coach Barry Trotz expects to play Smith in a big role. Like a first line center role.

Smith impressed at this summer's World Championships and should continue to impress the team's brass. Last season the Wisconsin native scored 19 goals and 43 points with his hometown University. Keep an eye on him as he should play a big role on the team this season.

Competition for a berth on the Boston blueline is getting fierce, what with Matt Bartkowski and Steve Kampfer both making a bid for playing time with the big club.

Kampfer could make the team in place of Joe Corvo or receive one of the first callups. Last season, the Ann Arbor, MI native scored three goals and 16 points in 22 games with the Providence Bruins and five goals and 10 points with the Bruins. He likely won't hold too much fantasy hockey value this season unless he again sees regular playing time with Zdeno Chara.

As far as Palmieri, Carlyle expressed disappointment in the winger’s performance overall as his play didn’t approach what he showed with the Crunch last season when he led them with 29 goals.

Palmieri failed to show up despite having a chance to earn playing time during training camp. The former 26th overall pick still led the Syracuse Crunch in goals last season and should be considered a top prospect. Look for him to get called up if any significant offensive player gets hurt.

In talking about Holland, Carlyle said “it’s not if he’s going to play in the NHL, it’s going to be when.” “He wasn’t going to play the 12-plus minutes here so it’s better for him to battle-test himself in the American Hockey League and prove that he’s the best player for the Syracuse hockey club. We’ll have people monitor his growth and his development and the way he is playing.

Sounds like Holland will be the first callup should anyone from the third line or up get injured. Last season, the former 15th overall pick scored 37 goals and 88 points for the Guelph Storm of the OHL. Look for him to continue his development with the Syracuse Crunch.

Matt Beleskey (shoulder) might be game-time decision

More good news for Beleskey, who battled injuries all last season. The 23-year-old proved in the past he can fill the back of the net when he scored 11 goals in 60 games back in 2009-2010. With most of the team's youngsters under-performing in training camp, expect Beleskey to earn a role.

Some bad news out of Panthers practice as center Mike Santorelli will be out for about 2-4 weeks with a shoulder injury sustained in the second period of Tuesday’s 4-3 OT loss to Dallas.

Tough news as Santorelli was expected to center one of the top two lines. The former 6th round pick scored 20 goals and 41 points last season with the Panthers. He should come near those totals this season if he remains a vital part of the team's offense.

Peter Regin: Listed as day-to-day by team with his injury. But Regin needs to undergo further tests. Opening night in DET in question.

With Regin out, expect Mika Zibanejad to get a longer look. Last season, Regin scored three goals and 17 points in a season where he battled through injuries and a sophomore slump. If healthy, he could pot 15 goals and approach 40 points.

DaCosta said he has a minor lower body injury that is not a big deal. That's why he briefly left skate today.

Sounds more precautionary than anything. Last season, the collegiate standout was held scoreless through four games with the Sens last season. He is expected to play on the third line.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
