Signed this summer largely because of a goaltending situation that had deteriorated in Syracuse, Jeff Deslauriers is showing himself to be a potentially solid insurance policy.

Deslauriers could see NHL action this season should Jonas Hiller or Dan Ellis get hurt. After losing 28 of 48 starts in 2009-2010, JDD was banished to the AHL by the lowly Oilers. He holds a very good chance at seeing some action with the Ducks at some point this year.

The 2009 first-round draft choice struggled with expectation and accountability but has looked like a different player. His stride is stronger, his commitment to play in traffic is better and the diminutive centre has caught the coach’s eye.

Schroeder has a chance to earn the third line center job with Ryan Kesler and Manny Malhotra both nursing injuries. Look for the second-year pro to make the decision increasingly hard for his coaches.

Scott Hartnell will undergo a stress test on Tues. to check out why his heart rate was elevated on Fri. #Flyers

Definitely a scary incident. hopefully he is OK in the long term. Hartnell scored 25 goals and 49 points last season for the Flyers, accruing 142 PIM in the process. Expect similar production across the board playing alongside Daniel Briere.

The Flyers' top prospect will likely be held out of the rest of the game for precautionary measures. Last season he only posted two assists in his eight-game stint with the LA Kings but is expected to make the team. Expect him to center the third line.

Sauer missed a good portion of the 2009-10 season with Hartford (AHL) after injuring his left shoulder in late January.

Sauer tweaked his shoulder and will be held out for the rest of the game for precautionary measures. With Marc Staal already injured, the Rangers will keep tabs on their remaining healthy defenders. While Sauer helps his team win games, both Tim Erixon and Michael Del Zotto have a better chance of picking up offensive minutes.

McLellan didn’t spell out which player Wingels would be replacing, but it’s clear that Michal Handzus and Torrey Mitchell fill two slots — and that would leave Jamie McGinn as the odd man out, for now at least.

Wingels will get a shot on the third line after mostly centering the fourth line last season. Last season he played five games with the Sharks with a minus-1 rating. After scoring 17 goals last season for the Worchester Sharks, Wingels could pot a few goals on the third line.

Saad is still a long shot to make the team, but Joel Quenneville intimated he’ll play in his team-high fifth preseason game Wednesday against the Detroit Red Wings. The Blackhawks are looking long and hard at Saad and there is always a chance the Hawks may keep him for a short period of time after the regular season begins. He can play up to nine games without starting the clock on his pro career and still be sent back to juniors.

Saad is certainly impressing his organization with some strong preseason play. Last season, the 18-year-old scored 27 goals and 55 points in 59 games with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. If he makes the team, he could be a high-end sleeper.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NHL hit Minnesota Wild forward Brad Staubitz hard, suspending him for the rest of the preseason and the first three regular-season games for an illegal check on Columbus' Cody Bass from behind.

Staubitz finished last season with 173 PIM along with four goals and nine points. Expect a similar amount of PIM but he has never produced more than 10 points in a season.

Blue Jackets defenseman James Wisniewski has been suspended for 12 games by the NHL for his clash last Friday with Minnesota Wild forward Cal Clutterbuck.

Tough suspension for Wisniewski which takes away a bit under 10 percent of his playing time. Despite scoring 10 goals and 51 points last season he likely finishes closer to the 40 point range on his new team with eight less games.

I want to play him. I want to give him some more games and give him a fair opportunity. We’re moving him up in the lineup tomorrow, with the look that he will have, and he might play two, three more games out of these four games that we have left. I like what he’s done.

Hunter could take Scott Parse's job on the third line. Last season, he was relegated to only 17 games where he potted a goal and four points. If he makes the team, he should score at least 10-15 goals but won't win any footraces.

Feisty winger Mike Brown knows he’ll have to play through pain, as soon as he gets the green light from the Maple Leafs medical staff.

When Brown does return he should play a prominent role on the gritty fourth line. Last season he scored three goals and eight points while adding 69 PIM. He probably won't help your fantasy team.

But Sather said while a concussion has not been ruled out, there are other things that could cause headaches such as Staal is experiencing. For instance, Sather mentioned, migraines or maybe a slipped disc.

Could just be speculation, but if true, Staal could have a good chance at playing in the team's season opener in Europe. The defensive defender missed five games due to his "not concussion" last season but scored five goals and 29 points. At this point his fantasy hockey value has dropped enough that he could even go undrafted in standard mixed leagues.
