Sacco also said defenseman Jan Hejda’s timetable remains the same — two to four weeks from a knee injury, but he’s hoping for the former, which would mean the big guy is playing in game No. 2 that kicks off a five-game road trip in Boston on Oct. 10.
Hejda's absense will allow a defender like Kyle Cumiskey or Jonas Holos to make the team. Last season, the stay-at-home defender scored five goals and 20 points through 77 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Don't expect anything more than those point totals, which were quite close to career highs.
Avalanche forward Brandon Yip, who broke a forearm blocking a shot in Friday’s preseason game against St. Louis, will miss four to six weeks, Colorado coach Joe Sacco said tonight after an impressive 3-0 win over Dallas
Yip already was on the outside of the lineup, looking in for the Avs. The former Boston University standout scored 12 goals and 22 points for the team last season after scoring 11 in 32 the season before. While he can score from a bottom-two line, there are likely much better options.
Line Change
He hasn't shown that yet, and if he doesn't against the Kings the bet here is he won't get too many more chances in this camp.
Tangradi was once the team's top prospect but his stock somewhat fell. Last season, he scored 18 goals and 33 points through 42 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Expect him to get a look at some point with the Pens this season.
As expected, the Penguins are limiting Brooks Orpik for much of camp and being cautious with him after undergoing hernia surgery this summer. The Penguins have been optimistic that Orpik would be ready for the start of the season, but the Penguins aren’t sure at this point.
Sounds like the team prefers not to rush Orpik back into the lineup but the rugged defender is not far off returning. If he can't make the team, look for Alexandre Picard and Ben Lovejoy to take his place on the blue line.
Sidney Crosby is still wearing a white hat in Penguins practice -- not because he's ready to ride in as the team's hero, but because his helmet needs to contrast with his teammates' black ones to signify that he's not allowed to have contact.
If you were planning on taking Crosby at a discount, or already own The Kid, then this news comes as good news. Although he has yet to take a hit, the captain continues to take positive steps in his road to recovery.
Injury
"(Sharp's) progressing," coach Joel Quenneville said. "I think he’s feleing good. He was out there a little bit (Sunday) and will do the same (Monday) and (Tuesday) and we’ll get a better indication after that how close he is to jumping on with us."
Sharp remains a possibility for opening night but likely returns shortly after. The versatile forward scored 34 goals and 71 points last season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Expect him to come near those totals, as he is expected to flank Jonathan Toews on the top line.

Line Change
Quenneville indicated the 20-year-old Pirri isn’t necessarily on the cusp of playing in the NHL, but he’s one of those guys the Hawks might have to count on at the center position if there are injuries. He was recalled from Rockford for one game last season.
Sounds like Pirri will at least start the season in the AHL. The 20-year-old managed to score 12 goals and 43 points through 70 games last season for the Rockford IceHogs. He should be one of the first callups for the Blackhawks this year.
"We might try Kane at center," Quenneville said. "He's been playing center throughout scrimmages and practices now. We'll see."
Kane has played center most of his career, so the transition should be natural. He scored 27 goals and 73 points in 73 games for the Blackhawks last season. Expect similar production this season even though he is still recovering from offseason surgery.

Coach Mike Babcock said Mursak will be out two months. He has a non-displaced fracture in his left ankle. No surgery is required. He went for an MRI.
The native of Yugoslavia was expected to make the team in a checking role or as as spare forward. In 19 games last season, Mursak managed to score on goal for the Red Wings. Don't expect much fantasy value this season.
The 23-year-old Russian had an awful game against the Devils on Friday but, as coach John Tortorella alluded to today, Valentenko said he hurt his groin in the game and took the blame for not informing the coaches.
Valentenko cleared waivers and should be the first callup should the Rangers need a defender. The 23-year-old scored five goals and 17 points through 79 games for the Connecticut Whale last season. Don't expect much if any fantasy value.

The longest suspension served was dealt to former-Detroit Red Wing David Perron at six-games after a cross-checking penalty dealt ironically against his current team in the 2024-25 season, the Ottawa Senators. Additionally, Perron was fined $148,437.48 for his actions.
