McCann (lower-body) missed Monday’s practice; doubtful for Tuesday’s game in Montreal.

McCann was forced to leave Saturday’s game in Washington with a lower-body injury and likely will not play on Tuesday. McCann has had a really nice start to 2017-18, posting a two goals and three assists (five points) in seven games. If McCann can’t play, look for Denis Malgin to draw in as the third line centre.

Wilson (undisclosed) will not play on Tuesday.

Wilson missed Monday’s practice with an undisclosed injury and will not play tomorrow vs. the Stars. Wilson has struggled with his new team, compiling just two assists in eight games to start the season. With Wilson out, look for Gabriel Bourque to make his season debut.

Fleury (concussion) will not return to the Golden Knights crease this week.

Fleury has been sidelined by a concussion since October 13th and will miss at least two more games this week. With Malcolm Subban suffering an injury of his own this weekend, the Golden Knights turn to the inexperienced duo of Oscar Dansk and Maxime Lagace between the pipes for at least two contests.

Ovechkin said it’s “nothing serious” after leaving Monday’s practice; expects to practice on Tuesday.

Ovechkin got tangled up at practice and limped off, but said after the session that it’s nothing serious and he expects to return to practice on Tuesday. The Capitals avoided disaster today and with them off until Thursday, expect the Russian sniper to be in the lineup in Vancouver.

Getzlaf (lower-body) will return to the Ducks lineup on Tuesday.

Getzlaf missed the last three games and five of the first seven, but will return to the lineup tomorrow. In the only two games that he has appeared in, Getzlaf has picked up two assists and four shots on goal.

Rask (concussion) returned to the ice on Monday.

Rask missed the last two games with a concussion, but he was on the ice with Bruins’ goalie coach Bob Essensa before Bruins practice this morning which is a good sign. Rask doesn’t have a timetable for his return, but his next step would be to get into practice. In the mean time, the Bruins will continue to lean on Anton Khudobin.

Burakovsky will miss Monday’s practice with an upper-body injury.

After being dropped to the third line on Friday, Burakovsky recorded a goal and assist, but he is reportedly banged up following this weekend’s back-to-back set. The Capitals are off until Thursday, so even if he’s kept off of the ice today he could avoid missing any time.

The Flames placed Jaromir Jagr on IR with a lower-body injury.

Jagr left Saturday’s game vs. Minnesota with a lower-body injury and was placed on IR retroactive to Saturday, so he will be forced to miss at least the next three games. Jagr is eligible to return Saturday vs. the Capitals, but it remains to be seen how long he will be sidelined. With Jagr out, expect either Sam Bennett or Michael Ferland to see time on the top-line with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan.

The Golden Knights placed Malcolm Subban (lower-body) on IR.

Subban suffered the injury during an excellent performance in Saturday’s eventual overtime win against St. Louis. Before getting hurt and turning the duties over to Oscar Dansk, Subban stopped 37 of 38 shots, keeping the Golden Knights afloat. Subban had been excellent while filling in for Marc-Andre Fleury, stopping 88 of 94 shots (.936 SV%) but now joins Fleury on IR.

MacDonald will miss 4-6 weeks with an apparent knee injury.

MacDonald suffered the injury while blocking a Milan Lucic in the third period of Saturday’s win over the Oilers. The blocked shot was his sixth of the game, but will cost him at least one month. With MacDonald out, rookie defenseman Samuel Morin could get a shot with the big club following a strong training camp.

Ryan is expected to miss one month with a broken right index finger.

Ryan suffered a hand injury for the fifth consecutive season when he broke his right index finger while blocking a Ron Hainsey shot in the Senators’ win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday. Ryan broke the same finger twice last season and it looks like the latest break will cost him one month or roughly 10-to-12 games.

Lindholm (shoulder) could make his season debut on Tuesday.

Lindholm has missed the first seven games of the season but it looks like he could return earlier than expected. The Finnish defenseman was expected to be out until at least November, but he is expected to practice on Monday and just needs the “green light” to return on Tuesday. Monitor his status on Monday afternoon.

Getzlaf has missed the last three games with a lower-body injury, but just needs the “green light” to play on Tuesday. The Ducks will practice Monday in Philadelphia, so monitor the captains status this afternoon.

Eaves (lower-body) will not travel on the Ducks’ four-game road trip.

Eaves has missed five of the Ducks’ first seven games of the season and it looks like he will miss at least four more. Eaves was moved to IR with a lower-body ailment and will not join the team for their road-trip which starts Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Fowler was hurt in Friday’s game vs. the Canadiens, but the Ducks have yet to determine how long their star defenseman will be sidelined. The injuries continue to mount for the Ducks as Fowler joins Hampus Lindholm and Sami Vatanen as banged up Ducks’ defensemen. With Fowler out, Brandon Montour becomes a must-add in fantasy circles.

In the NHL, players are often moved in and out of the lineup due to injury but when an issue occurs in which a player is set to miss an extended period of time, they must be placed under the official designation of the injured reserve list. NHL teams utilize reserve lists as a way to provide injured players time to recover from their physical ailments, as well as to free up space within their active roster to replace the output of their missing player.

There are two versions of reserve lists in the NHL, the injured reserve list (IR) and the long term injured reserve list (LTIR). Each reserve list holds their own distinctions for players to qualify, as well as how teams are able to replace members of the roster when they are forced to send an injured athlete to an injury reserve list. One major difference between the IR and the LTIR is the ability to circumvent the salary cap. When a player is placed on the LTIR, teams are able to pull from what is referred to as the “LTIR Pool”. The LTIR pool is the amount in which a team is granted in cap space after a player has been assigned to the LTIR. This amount is determined by subtracting the total amount of cap space remaining for a team from the affected player’s salary cap hit for the season. The amount given in the LTIR pool is also dependent on whether a team is under or over the salary cap at the beginning of the regular season.

For example, if a player who has a $2 million annual cap hit is placed on the LTIR and their team was under the salary cap by $500K, they would deduct the $500K in remaining cap space from the player’s annual salary hit, leaving the team with $1.5M to spend on replacements for their injured player.

However, if a team is over the salary cap to begin the regular season the LTIR pool is divided differently. In this case whatever the value of the overage in salary cap is at the start of the season will be the LTIR pool funds available for a club. For example, if a team is over the salary cap by $1 million, and a player with a $5 million cap hit is placed on the LTIR, their LTIR pool is valued at $1M as that is the amount they were over the cap to begin the season.

When a player is removed from the LTIR, the team must be under the annual salary cap hit on that day.
