Sergachev has not played since December 19th but will return to the lineup on Wednesday. Wednesday's tilt against the New York Rangers marks the first game Sergachev is eligible to return after being placed on LTIR in December. Sergachev had 19 points (2G / 17A) in 33 games before his injury.

Cizikas (lower body) was a full participant in practice Wednesday and is a game-time decision Thursday.

Cizikas has been out of the lineup since January 9th due to a lower-body injury but appears just about ready to return to the lineup on Thursday. The 32-year-old is producing at a similar rate to his previous seasons, with 11 points (5G/6A) in 39 games played before his injury.

Johnson (right foot) has been activated from the Injured Reserve.

Johnson last played on December 31st and has been on injured reserve since, missing 14 games with a foot injury. The 33-year-old veteran has been one of many injured regulars for the Blackhawks this season but appears ready to return to the lineup on Wednesday. Johnson started the season well with nine goals, 13 points, 16 PIMsand 58 SOG in 35 games played before the injury.

Smith (upper-body) will play against the Jets on Tuesday.

Smith has missed the Penguins' previous six games due to an upper-body injury but will return to the lineup on Tuesday vs. Winnipeg. The 32-year-old right-winger is in his first season with Pittsburgh after being acquired from Vegas for a 2024 third-round pick in the offseason. He is having a down year by his personal standards having only collected 20 points (8G/12A) in his first 40 games.

Tippett has been out since January 20th due to a lower-body injury but was activated off the Injured Reserve Tuesday and is expected to return to his top-six role. The 24-year-old is enjoying somewhat of a breakout season which led to a big contract extension this season with 18 goals, 30 points, 167 SOG, two PIMs, and a -3 plus/minus in 46 games played.

Karlsson (lower body) is expected to return to the Golden Knights' lineup Tuesday.

Karlsson missed all but one game in January (12 total) due to a lower-body injury but was a full participant in practice Sunday and is expected to play on Tuesday. The 31-year-old is having his best season in Vegas since his historical inaugural campaign with the team in 2017-18 as he has 15 goals, 32 points, 93 SOG, and a +10 plus/minus in 38 games before his injury.

Scheifele (lower body) has been activated from the Injured Reserve.

Scheifele has missed the Jets' previous six games as he dealt with a lower-body injury but will return to Winnipeg's lineup on Tuesday vs. Pittsburgh. The 30-year-old star centre will make a much-welcomed return as he currently leads the Jets in points with 14 goals and 41 points in 41 games played before his injury.

Hayton has not played since mid-November but appears to be nearing a return to the lineup. Before his injury, Hayton had four points (2G / 2A) in his last five games after being held without a single point in his previous 11.

Dumba (upper body) returned to Arizona's practice in a regular jersey Tuesday.

Dumba's return to the lineup appears imminent after being a full participant at practice on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Dumba has been limited to only five points (2G / 3A) in 44 games with the Coyotes this season while playing predominantly on a defensive pair with Travis Dermott.

Brodin (illness) will be a game-time decision Wednesday in Chicago.

Brodin returned from a five-week absence due to an upper-body injury last month and has played seven consecutive games since, tallying four points (0G / 4A), 13 shots, and three hits. He has predominantly played on a defensive pair with Zach Bogosian and will likely return to that spot if he can play on Wednesday.

Forbort missed Boston's previous game as he dealt with an undisclosed injury but has used the break to heal up and was a full participant in Boston's practice Sunday. With the Bruins returning to action Tuesday vs. Calgary, Forbort will return to the lineup as he looks to pick up his first goal of the campaign despite having four assists, 15 SOG, and a +12 plus/minus in 24 games played.

DeBrusk missed the last game before the All-Star break due to an undisclosed injury but will return to the lineup on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames. DeBrusk has five points (3G / 2A) in his last five games while playing primarily on a line with Charlie Coyle and Brad Marchand.

Poitras missed the Bruins' previous game before the All-Star break due to an undisclosed injury but, despite being a full participant in practice Sunday, will remain out of the lineup on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames. The 19-year-old rookie left the Bruins briefly in December to attend this year's World Jr Tournament and has made a solid impact in his rookie season with five goals and 15 points in 33 games played.

Pacioretty (lower body) is expected to return to the Capitals' lineup Tuesday vs. Montreal.

Pacioretty exited the Capitals' last game before the All-Star break with a lower-body injury, playing only 10:25 time-on-ice. The injury is unrelated to the Achilles injury responsible for him missing most of the last two seasons. As such, he participated in practice on Monday and will return to the lineup on Tuesday. Before his injury, Pacioretty registered four points (0G / 4A) in his last five games.

Cousins was the recipient of a controversial hit from Arizona's Jason Zucker, which led to a three-game suspension. Cousins has been out of the lineup since, missing 12 games due to a concussion. The 30-year-old scrappy centre has struggled to produce offensively in 2023-24 with only two goals, three assists, 20 PIMs, 63 SOG and a -10 plus/minus in 37 games.

Milano has not played since December 10th, missing 22 games with an upper-body injury, but appears to be nearing a return to the lineup imminently. Milano had been held to only one point (1G / 0A) in his last nine games before his injury, firing only six shots on goal and averaging 11:19 time-on-ice.

Hughes (upper body) returned to the Devils' practice in a regular jersey Tuesday but will not play vs. Colorado.

Hughes has not played since January 5th but has a chance to return to the lineup this week as he is considered day-to-day. Regardless of his exact return date, his presence as a full participant at practice on Tuesday is an encouraging sign for a Devils club that has struggled in his absence. Hughes has been limited to only 32 games in an injury-plagued 2023-24 campaign but has 45 points (15G / 30A) in that span.

Reserve Lists

In the NHL, players are often moved in and out of the lineup due to injury but when an issue occurs in which a player is set to miss an extended period of time, they must be placed under the official designation of the injured reserve list. NHL teams utilize reserve lists as a way to provide injured players time to recover from their physical ailments, as well as to free up space within their active roster to replace the output of their missing player.

There are two versions of reserve lists in the NHL, the injured reserve list (IR) and the long term injured reserve list (LTIR). Each reserve list holds their own distinctions for players to qualify, as well as how teams are able to replace members of the roster when they are forced to send an injured athlete to an injury reserve list. Below are the key differences between each reserve list and how an injured player can find themselves placed there in a season.

Injured Reserve List

The injured reserve list (IR) is for any player who is set to miss seven calendar days or more due to injury, disablement or illness is designated. One major difference between the IR and the LTIR is the ability to circumvent the salary cap. When a player is placed on the LTIR, teams are able to pull from what is referred to as the “LTIR Pool”. The LTIR pool is the amount in which a team is granted in cap space after a player has been assigned to the LTIR. This amount is determined by subtracting the total amount of cap space remaining for a team from the affected player’s salary cap hit for the season. The amount given in the LTIR pool is also dependent on whether a team is under or over the salary cap at the beginning of the regular season.

For example, if a player who has a $2 million annual cap hit is placed on the LTIR and their team was under the salary cap by $500K, they would deduct the $500K in remaining cap space from the player’s annual salary hit, leaving the team with $1.5M to spend on replacements for their injured player.

However, if a team is over the salary cap to begin the regular season the LTIR pool is divided differently. In this case whatever the value of the overage in salary cap is at the start of the season will be the LTIR pool funds available for a club. For example, if a team is over the salary cap by $1 million, and a player with a $5 million cap hit is placed on the LTIR, their LTIR pool is valued at $1M as that is the amount they were over the cap to begin the season.

When a player is removed from the LTIR, the team must be under the annual salary cap hit on that day.
