The Anaheim Ducks are waiting with bated breath to find out more about an injury to superstar forward Trevor Zegras.

As Zegras skated to a loose puck in the neutral zone just over eight minutes into the second period, Coyotes prospect Jan Jenik lined him up at the center ice line catching him with a hard hit. Zegras hit the ice as teammate Adam Henrique jumped in to fight Jenik.

Zegras went right to the locker room after the hit and the Ducks later announced he wouldn’t return to the game with an upper-body injury. Jenik wasn’t penalized for the hit.

The hope is that any injury isn’t serious for a Ducks team that will rely on Zegras all year to help produce offence.

Despite scoring three goals and 13 points in 24 brief games at the end of the 2020-21 season, Zegras broke out last season in his first full season. He appeared in 75 games scoring 23 goals and 61 points and finished a distant second in the Calder Trophy race behind Detroit Red Wings rearguard Moritz Seider.

Anaheim next plays on Friday night hosting the San Jose Sharks and have three more preseason games following before their season opener on Oct. 12.
