2025 IIHF World Championship: Switzerland advances to final, will face USA

Switzerland is off to the final game of the IIHF World Championship for the second straight year after beating Denmark 7-0 on Saturday.
The Swiss will face off against the United States at 2:20 PM ET on Sunday.
This will mark the fourth championship outing for the Swiss dating back to 2013. The Swiss lost each of them, including a 2-0 final to Czechia just a year ago. Switzerland has never won a gold under any tournament format, but has 12 medals between silver and bronze.
Denmark has never played for a medal and will look to stun the Swedes in Stockholm on Sunday afternoon.
Switzerland started the game with a goal at 9:23. It was reviewed after Nino Niederreiter deflected the puck off his foot and into the net. The goal was reviewed, but it wasn’t an intentional deflection and it counted. Three minutes later, Ken Jager made it 2-0 after his shot bounced off a Danish defender and in, giving Switzerland a comfortable advantage early.
Denmark had plenty of opportunities to score on the man advantage but couldn’t find a way to beat goaltender Leonardo Genoni. Instead, Denis Malgin made it 4-0 at 37:38, taking any chance of a Danish comeback away. Sandro Schmid, Damien Riat and Tyler Moy each scored goals in the third to make it 7-0 to close out the evening.
Here’s a look at the top performers from the final semifinal game:
Denmark
#48 Nicholas B. Jensen, D: The Danes struggled to generate many high-quality chances by Jensen had a decent showing in the O-Zone. He liked to rush the puck, didn’t buckle under pressure and was one of the team’s top shot generators.
Switzerland
#22 Nino Niederreiter, RW (Winnipeg Jets): El Nino has been such a great player for the Swiss, and while his first goal was a bit fluky, it still showed how smart he is. He does a great job of getting to the net and creating opportunities for himself. Niederreiter’s second goal was a more difficult effort, having to battle in front of the net to direct a second chance past Dichow to make it 3-0.
#62 Denis Malgin, C: The former NHLer has 10 assists in this tournament, but it took him nine games to finally score. Malgin loves using open space as much as anyone, and he created it on his 4-0 goal when he escaped from the corner, rushed in and scored on Dichow to get on the board. Malgin also had a couple of nice defensive plays to break up plays, as well.
#63 Leonardo Genoni, G: Genoni just needed to hold the fort in the second half and did so perfectly. The veteran goaltender has been a rock for the Swiss for well over a decade now, and even in his late 30s, his footwork and puck tracking are still top-notch. Genoni was great on the penalty kill especially, which prevented a potential late-game collapse like USA found themselves on the heels of in the third period against Sweden. Genoni will have a tougher battle on Sunday, so he better be up for it.
