34 NHL players placed on waivers for Sept. 23
A boatload of players have been cut from NHL training camps.
On Wednesday, 34 players across the league were placed on waivers, making them available to the other 31 teams in the NHL.
If they were to clear the wire on Thursday, they would be eligible to be assigned to their respective American Hockey League affiliates.
Of the 14 teams that put players on waivers, the Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender placed Jonas Johansson on the wire, and looks to be joining the Syracuse Crunch. He has been the backup to Andrei Vasilevskiy for the past three years, but with the Lightning receiving Dennis Hildeby in the Nick Paul trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Johansson is the odd man out.
In 105 career NHL games, the 31-year-old has a record of 43-36-14, with a 3.29 goals-against average, a .884 save percentage and four shutouts.
Speaking of the Leafs, they also put a couple of names on the list, including veteran defenseman Dakota Mermis. Mermis is heading into the second season of his two-year contract with the Leafs. In his second stint with the team, he has spent most of the time with the Toronto Marlies, but did appear in 11 games with the big club in 2025-26, scoring his first NHL goal since the 2023-24 season.
Jumping back between the pipes, a number of goaltenders were put on the wire on Wednesday. Pheonix Copley (Columbus Blue Jackets), Spencer Martin (New York Rangers) and Jaxson Stauber (Utah Mammoth) are a few goaltenders with significant NHL experience, but might not be starting the 2026-27 season on their big club’s roster.

15 players were placed on waivers on Tuesday, including Detroit Red Wings forward Dominik Shine and New York Rangers defenseman Urho Vaakanainen. Everyone cleared and can be sent to their AHL clubs.
