The main part of Steen’s role will be helping to select the final roster for the team before it heads to Milan in February. He will play a key role in scouting talent during the NHL season, working under General Manager Anders Lundberg. However, Steen will not travel with the team when it heads to the Olympics.
Nevertheless, Steen, who helped Sweden take home the silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, is excited about the opportunity to help this country as NHLers are poised to return to the Games.
“I am honored to have this opportunity,” Steen said in a release. “Representing Sweden is a privilege that I value extremely highly. I look forward to working closely with our association, our leadership team, and our fantastic players as we prepare for the Olympics.”
Steen will get a solid first-hand look at what Sweden’s top NHLers have to offer. The special assistant to the GM of the St. Louis Blues, Doug Armstrong, is being groomed to take over the top job, starting next season. Along with the 2014 Winter Games, Steen also played for his country at the 2007 IIHF Men’s World Championship, the 2003 and 20024 IIHF World Junior Championships and the 2002 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.
The final roster for Tre Kronor will be announced by head coach Sam Hallam in mid-January. The Swedes are searching for their first medal at the Olympics in 12 years, and the country’s first ice hockey gold since 2006, the last time the Winter Games were held in Italy.
