Scott Harrington is on the move … again.

After being acquired by the New Jersey Devils on Sunday and subsequently waived on Monday, Harrington found himself right back in California on Tuesday after the Anaheim Ducks claimed him off the waiver wire.

Harrington began the week as a member of the San Jose Sharks before being included in the blockbuster Timo Meier trade with the Devils. The 29-year-old defenseman collected seven points (one goal, six assists) while averaging 15:18 in 28 games with the Sharks this season.

(Perhaps coincidentally, the Ducks subsequently traded unsigned NCAA defense prospect Henry Thrun to the Sharks in a separate deal on Tuesday).

Harrington is signed to a one-year, two-way deal for the 2022–23 season worth $750,000 in the NHL and $350,000 in the AHL, with a minimum guaranteed take-home figure of $400,000. To this point, he’s appeared in just five AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda this season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins originally selected Harrington in the second round (No. 54 overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. He spent part of the 2014–15 season with the Penguins before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of the Phil Kessel blockbuster.

After just one season split between the Maple Leafs and AHL’s Toronto Marlies, Harrington moved on to the Columbus Blue Jackets, with whom he spent parts of six seasons. He joined the Sharks on a professional tryout in September 2022 and successfully earned an NHL contract in training camp.

The Ducks currently rank eighth in the NHL’s Pacific Division with a 20–34–7 record and 47 points through 61 games this season. Harrington joins a defense group featuring Cam Fowler, Kevin Shattenkirk, John Klingberg, Dmitry Kulikov, and Nathan Beaulieu.

Through 238 career NHL games with Pittsburgh, Toronto, Columbus, and San Jose, Harrington has collected eight goals and 45 points. He’s also recorded four assists in 14 playoff contests.
