Ducks sign Sean Farrell to one-year extension

The Anaheim Ducks wasted little time locking up their newest player.

On Tuesday, the Ducks signed forward Sean Farrell to a one-year, two-way contract extension.

The deal will carry a cap hit of $850,000 at the NHL level. Farrell is now scheduled to become a group 6 unrestricted free agent next offseason.

Anaheim acquired Farrell from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday in exchange for forward Sasha Pastujov. Farrell was a restricted free agent at the time of the deal, so the Ducks still needed to get him under contract for the 2026-27 season.

Farrell, 24, had 17 goals and 36 assists for 53 points in 72 games for Montreal’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Laval Rocket last season.

The Hopkinton, Massachusetts native was selected by the Canadiens out of the United Stated Hockey League (USHL) in the fourth round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. After getting drafted, he spent one more season with the USHL’s Chicago Steel, in which he starred with 29 goals and 72 assists for 101 points in 53 games. He then contributed 10 points in eight playoff games during Chicago’s run to a Clark Cup championship.

Farrell then went on to a productive two-year collegiate career with Harvard University, where he totalled 30 goals and 51 assists for 81 points in 58 games. He joined the Canadiens at the tail end of the 2022-23 season, notching a goal and no assists in six games. He spent all of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons with Laval, scoring 29 goals and addoing 43 assists for 72 points over 114 games.

Internationally, he represented the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where he had three goals and three assists for six points in four games. He also played for the United States at the 2022 and 2023 IIHF World Championsips.

At 5’9″ and 175 pounds, Farrell is an undersized winger known for his crafty, playmaking ability.
