Senators acquire Burakovsky from Blackhawks for draft pick

The Ottawa Senators have acquired veteran winger Andre Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, the club announced Friday afternoon.
Burakovsky, 31, recorded 11 goals, 33 points, and a minus-32 rating in 75 games with the Blackhawks in the 2025-26 regular season. The 6’3″ winger is entering the final year of his current contract, which carries a $5.5 million annual cap hit.
Earlier on Friday, the Senators acquired the RFA rights to goaltender Samuel Ersson from the Toronto Maple Leafs; they also re-signed pending RFA defenseman Jordan Spence to a new four-year contract worth $5 million per season.
TRADE ALERT: The #Sens have acquired forward André Burakovsky from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 6th round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft.
A first-round pick (No. 23 overall) of the Washington Capitals in the 2013 NHL Draft, Burakovsky began his career with the Capitals in the 2014-15 season. He spent five seasons in D.C. and played a supporting role in the Capitals winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.
The Colorado Avalanche acquired Burakovsky from Washington in the 2019 offseason. The Austrian-born Swede enjoyed the most productive years of his career in Denver, topping out with 22 goals and 61 points with the Avs during the 2021-22 season and winning another Stanley Cup with the club that spring.
As a free agent from the Avalanche in 2022, Burakovsky signed a five-year contract with the Seattle Kraken. He spent three largely injury-plagued seasons in the Pacific Northwest before being traded to Chicago in 2025.
Through 771 career NHL games over parts of 12 seasons split between the Capitals, Avalanche, Kraken, and Blackhawks, Burakovsky has collected 164 goals and 420 points. He’s added 20 goals and 47 points in 93 career playoff contests.
Burakovsky will now join a Senators team gunning to make a third consecutive playoff appearance in 2026-27. The Senators have been one of the NHL’s most active teams this summer, most notably trading captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers and acquiring winger William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks.
