According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Ottawa Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg has been sidelined with an undisclosed injury and will not play Monday. The Senators are set to play a home game against the Dallas Stars.

The Senators have also recalled AHL goalie Kevin Mandolese to back up probable starter Magnus Hellberg in tonight’s game against the Stars. This will be the first NHL start for Magnus Hellberg since he played a game for the Detroit Red Wings last season. He has five games of NHL experience and a wealth of professional experience playing for teams in Russia, Sweden, and North America.

The Forsberg news is troubling for the Senators, who are now without both of their NHL goalies, Forsberg and Cam Talbot. Talbot is still a few weeks away from returning to NHL action. They have also learned that center Josh Norris will miss at least two weeks with a shoulder injury.

The Senators’ depth will be tested at the forward and goaltending positions, beginning versus the red-hot Dallas Stars.

Magnus Hellberg was claimed by the Senators off waivers from the Seattle Kraken when they found out that Talbot would be missing some time with an injury. This is a great opportunity for Hellberg to make his mark on the NHL and prove he belongs there.

The Senators and the Stars have both been on a roll of late. Dallas has a record of 4-0-1 to start the season and Ottawa has won three home games consecutively. The silver lining for the Senators is that the Stars will be resting their starter Jake Oettinger, and backup Scott Wedgewood will start Monday.

The Senators are aiming for the fourth home win in a row and to do that they will need a solid debut performance from Hellberg.
