Now that a previously unreachable milestone has been surpassed, it begs the question – can, or will, anyone else ever hit 900?

On Wednesday night, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history to score 900 career goals, further cementing his status as one of the greatest players to ever lace up his skates.

With the milestone now reached, many wonder if anyone else can pot that many goals in a single career. Many wonder if Toronto Maple Leafs sniper Auston Matthews can reach 900, but his recent health woes have led many to doubt if he can ever eclipse Ovechkin’s goal total.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss who, if anyone, will ever score 900 goals again.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I will say, right now in the NHL, I don’t think there’s an authentic threat to even get particularly close at one point I would have maybe said Auston Matthews, but he can’t stay healthy

Carter Hutton: I think it’s off the table for now…the way Matthews has kind of tailed off and had a little bit of injuries, and I think he’s redefined his game as well, too. Like, I think Ovi has done this, which is even more impressive. Like, think about that Barry Trotz era when he came into Washington…even during that run, he was still able to produce and score and buy into a system that helped him win a Stanley Cup. So, I just don’t think it’s going to be capable. … I think there’s going to be guys that get close, but to stay healthy and produce for that long, I think it’s off the table.

Tyler: Again, maybe he goes on a run year where Matthews stays healthy for four or five straight years and puts together a 60-goal season here, and gets into the high 50s a couple of times. Maybe I’ll give it a little bit of time, but I still wouldn’t be betting on it.
