Matthews dealt with a nagging wrist injury for the majority of the 2021 season yet still led the league in scoring with 41 goals.
He originally injured his wrist in a game against the Oilers on Jan. 20 and was out of the lineup with an “upper-body injury” two nights later. The wrist injury would keep Matthews out of four of Toronto’s 56 games.
Matthews scored just one goal in Toronto’s first-round loss in the playoffs to the Montreal Canadiens. The nagging wrist issue he dealt with was likely a cause for those struggles.
