The New York Islanders have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with defenseman Ben Hutton, the club announced Thursday evening.

Hutton, 33, had signed a professional tryout agreement with the Islanders on Monday. According to PuckPedia, his new contract with the Islanders is a one-way NHL deal that carries a pro-rated $900,000 cap hit.

The Ottawa Senators previously signed Hutton to a PTO ahead of their 2026 training camp but released him after he failed to crack their opening roster. The 6’3″ left-shot defender spent the last five seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights, helping them win the Stanley Cup in 2023.

Hutton initially joined the Golden Knights as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. He settled in as a depth option on their blue line over the following five seasons, most recently skating in 55 games with the club during the 2025-26 regular season and seven more over their run to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

The Vancouver Canucks originally selected Hutton in the fifth round (No. 147 overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft. The Brockville, Ont. product spent his first three post-draft seasons at the University of Maine before turning pro in 2015.

Hutton immediately established himself as an NHL regular with the Canucks in the 2015-16 season, and save for four games with the Utica Comets directly out of school, he has never played in the AHL during his professional career. Hutton followed up his first four NHL seasons in Vancouver with a single-season stint with the Los Angeles Kings; following that, he split the 2020-21 campaign between the Anaheim Ducks and Toronto Maple Leafs before joining the Golden Knights.

In 575 career NHL games over parts of 11 seasons with the Canucks, Kings, Ducks, Maple Leafs, and Golden Knights, Hutton has collected 30 goals and 139 points. He’s added one assist in 10 career playoff contests, all with Vegas.

The Islanders are slated to return to action on Thursday night to take on the Carolina Hurricanes at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
