If you were asked who the best Canadian goaltenders were a dozen or so games into the 2026-27 NHL regular season, which names would come to mind? You might go straight to the Washington Capitals’ Logan Thompson, or the Colorado Avalanche’s Mackenzie Blackwood. There’s even one goalie for the St. Louis Blues who has stood out, but it may not be the one you think…

On Tuesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, former NHL goaltender Carter Hutton and former NHL video coach Steve Peters take part in another edition of the #AskDFO segment, where they try to determine who is Canada’s top goalie so far in 2026-27.

Carter Hutton: I’ll let you go first since you have seniority: who do you think is Canada’s hope right now, as Jordan Binnington has been on the outside looking in.

Steve Peters: I think if we had to go today, I’d go with Logan Thompson. He’s a more experienced guy, he’s had success in the last few years … I think he gives me the warm fuzzies. If he’s in the net, he gives me some security.

Jordan Binnington, he’s a guy who even if he struggles, has been outstanding for Team Canada. But I do think it’s time to pass the torch, and for me, that guy is Logan Thompson.

Carter Hutton: This is where I think this situation gets very interesting, because of the depth situation we have, right? You think about the particular names we’ve heard: Mackenzie Blackwood, Jordan Binnington, Darcy Kuemper, Adin Hill … I think you take all those guys out of the list. As a No. 3, Binnington could stay, just based on experience in a sort of “break glass in case of emergency” situation.

But for me, it’s the young guys: Jet Greaves, Devon Levi, Joel Hofer. That’s a pretty good wave of guys coming. I think Thompson is your guy, but you mix in a young guy and a veteran.

Steve Peters: When you look at the goaltending, and I’m trying to say this as kindly as possible, but Canada needs to dominate. If you go back 10, 12 years, they had Carey Price and Martin Brodeur or Patrick Roy. You had five, six, seven guys deep and they could have picked any of those guys and dominate, internationally. And that’s fallen off over the last little bit.

I’m not saying these guys aren’t good goaltenders, but it’s not the guys we listed from a decade ago, and I sit there and wonder why. The best goalies in the world right now are Russians. I think at some point, you have to think, is it too expensive to be a goalie anymore?

Is there too much coaching that turns these guys into robots? What is happening to not just Canadian goaltending, but North American goaltending as a whole has changed the way they play the game.
