Blue Jackets sign Jake Christiansen to a one-year, two-way contract extension

Columbus Blue Jackets general manager and alternate governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced Monday that the club had signed defenseman Jake Christiansen to a one-year, two-way contract extension running through the 2023-24 season.

Christiansen would have become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights this summer.

Christiansen notched four points in 24 games with the Blue Jackets this past season. He primarily played in the American Hockey League with the Blue Jackets farm team, the Cleveland Monsters. Christiansen recorded 11 goals and 34 points in 50 games this past season with the Monsters. Last season, he scored the most goals by a defenseman in the AHL with 13 and was named to the AHL Second All-Star Team. In 149 AHL games, the 23-year-old has recorded 27 goals and 67 assists for 94 points.

The West Vancouver product played five seasons with the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League before going pro. In the 2017-18 season on a team that featured Carter Hart, Dustin Wolf and Connor Dewar, Christiansen played a pivotal role and recorded 31 points in 72 regular season games before adding seven points in 22 playoff games as the Silvertips went all the way to the WHL Championship but lost to the Swift Current Broncos. He appeared in 297 WHL regular season games, recording 50 goals and 102 assists for 152 points and plus-84. He was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team in the 2019-20 season after leading the league in goals by a defenseman.

Christiansen will look for a full-time role on the Blue Jackets blueline for the 2023-24 season.
