Blues’ Brayden Schenn loses puck in shootout attempt, Canucks win on next shot

The St. Louis Blues’ woeful opening month continued with a bizarre lowlight near the end of Thursday’s home loss to the Vancouver Canucks, when captain Brayden Schenn watched the puck slide aimlessly off his stick and into the corner during a shootout attempt.
DISASTER for Brayden Schenn in the shootout as he loses the puck, and the Canucks win it with their next shooter 😭😫 pic.twitter.com/c2cUdRMJvf
— Gino Hard (@GinoHard_) October 31, 2025Just after the officials whistled up the veteran centerman for mishandling the puck near the halfboards and failing to test ‘Nucks goalie Kevin Lankinen, Vancouver winger Jake DeBrusk dispatched his attempt to seal a Canucks victory and stretch the Blues’ losing streak to six.
St. Louis had dominated puck possession and territory throughout the night and beat Lankinen three times off the sticks of Dylan Holloway, Jimmy Snuggerud, and Pius Suter, but could not keep the shorthanded Canucks down despite outshooting them 39-18.
Timely stops from Lankinen and middle-six banger Kiefer Sherwood’s second career hat trick kept Vancouver in the contest, where they outlasted the Blues despite having earlier added star sniper Brock Boeser to their already extensive injury report.
While the Canucks’ victory dragged them back to .500 as they await the return of Connor Garland, Quinn Hughes, and others, the Blue Notes will wonder what’s next after another deflating defeat solidified their spot at the bottom of the Central Division.
St. Louis charged into the 2025 playoffs with a sizzling second-half comeback last season (19-4-3 after the 4 Nations break), but the team seems to have forgotten the buttoned-up defense that galvanized that charge in the months since last season ended.
Only the lowly San Jose Sharks have conceded more goals per game. With Team Canada hopeful Robert Thomas and top goalscorer Jake Neighbours (6 G) on the shelf with injuries, there isn’t enough firepower to cover the difference in St. Louis, not least of all if they can’t hit the frame in a one-on-one with the goalie.
Schenn and the Blues won’t have to wait long for a chance to put his gaffe in the rearview; they’re off to Columbus to finish up a back-to-back against the Blue Jackets on Halloween night.
