The St. Louis Blues have finally gotten a timeline for their injured leading scorer.

The team announced on Saturday that center Robert Thomas has undergone a minor procedure on his leg and is expected to return following the NHL’s Olympic break.

Thomas, 26, has 11 goals and 22 assists this season for a total of 33 points, a mark that leads the team despite Thomas having only appeared in 42 of the Blues’ 55 games so far. The Aurora, Ontario native hasn’t played since sustaining a lower-body injury during January 10th’s 4-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.

That a mere 33 points tops St. Louis’ scoring chart is a testament to how much they have struggled offensively this season. Their 2.48 goals scored per game ranks 31st in the NHL, above only the Calgary Flames. The Blues will certainly welcome Thomas’ offensive prowess when their season resumes in late February. If Thomas is ready to go immediately upon return from the Olympic break, his first game back will be at home against the Seattle Kraken on February 26th.

With the Blues scuffling through a difficult season that currently has them dead last in the Central Division, Thomas has been the subject of some trade speculation. Given Thomas’ youth and track record of production, you can see why teams would be interested in acquiring him. Drafted 20th overall in 2017, Thomas was a rookie on the Blues’ 2019 Stanley Cup championship team. By his fourth NHL season, he broke out, putting up 20 goals and 57 assists for 77 points over 72 games in 2021-22. His best season came in 2023-24, when he scored 26 goals and added 60 assists for 86 points in all 82 regular season games.

Following St. Louis’ 5-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday, they will visit the Nashville Predators on Monday and the Dallas Stars on Wednesday prior to the Olympic break.
