The Boston Bruins will be without a key piece of their forward group for the time being, as center Casey Mittelstadt is set to be sidelined on a week-to-week basis with an upper-body injury.

Bruins head coach Marco Sturm told a group of reporters including Conor Ryan of The Boston Globe the update on the center’s status as well as that he is currently feeling better than was expected.

Mittelstadt last appeared during Thursday night’s home game against Ottawa. For the season, he has put up 9 points in 15 games on 4 goals and 5 assists. The six-foot-one pivot from the state of Minnesota is in his second season as a member of the Bruins after coming over last year in a deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

The 26-year-old struggled in Boston last season, only managing 6 points in 18 games while skating to a minus-17 rating, but he had 34 points in 63 games with Colorado prior to the trade.

Last year was the second campaign in a row in which Mittelstadt was dealt, as he was swapped to Colorado for defenseman Bowen Byram in a deal with the Buffalo Sabres last year. Mittelstadt had spent his entire career up until that point with Buffalo, which drafted him with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

For his career, Mittelstadt has 245 points in 453 career regular season appearances.

In Mittelstadt’s absence, Marat Khusnutdinov has moved up to center the first line flanked by Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak.

The Bruins picked up a key division victory on the road against Toronto on Saturday night to run their record to 10-7-0 while picking up their sixth consecutive victory. Boston will have another shot at the Leafs on Tuesday night in a rematch set for a 7:00 PM EST puck drop at TD Garden.
