The Boston Bruins have announced that defenseman Hampus Lindholm will not return to Thursday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks due to a lower-body injury.

At this point in time, there’s no indication to a specific play that caused Lindholm’s injury. He did not play after the 12-minute mark of the first period, and the Bruins announced after the start of the second period that he would not be returning to the game.

Lindholm left the game having played just 4:25 of ice time over the course of six shifts, with just a shot on his stat line in the game. The game was tied 1-1 at the time of his departure.

Lindholm missed 65 games last season due to a broken knee cap, and was playing in just his second game since November 12th, 2024. The fact that the former sixth-overall pick’s injury is labeled as a lower-body injury does cause some concern, but more details on the specifics of the injury should be expected either after the game or after he undergoes an evaluation.

With Lindholm out of the lineup, Mason Lohrei and Nikita Zadorov have been rotating at the left defense spot with Lindholm’s partner, Andrew Peeke. Should Lindholm not be available for Saturday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres, Jordan Harris was the Bruins’ lone healthy scratch on defense and is expected to draw into the lineup.

Lindholm has no points through two games to start the 2025-26 season, but he did produce at his usual pace last season before suffering the broken knee cap, as he had three goals and four assists for seven points in 17 games.

While Lindholm is a more than capable puck mover and producer, he’s better known for his two-way game, driving play at both ends of the ice with a 0.053 5v5 regularized adjusted plus-minus expected goals four per 60 minutes and a -0.16 5v5 RAPM expected goals against per 60.

Lindholm is beginning the fourth year of an eight-year contract with a $6.5 million cap hit.
