Bruins’ Matthew Poitras placed on injured reserve with lower-body injury
Tough news for a youngster heading into the start of a new season.
On Sunday, the Boston Bruins announced that forward Matthew Poitras will start the 2026-27 season on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury.
Poitras suffered the injury this past Tuesday, which kept him out of the Bruins’ final three preseason games. With him going on IR to begin the campaign, there’s a chance that the 22-year-old will also miss the first four games of the regular season as well.
Bruins head coach Marco Sturm seems optimistic about Poitras coming back to the lineup sooner rather than later.
“He’s getting a lot better,” Sturm told reporters on Sunday. “I’m happy about Matty because the timing wasn’t good and he actually feels better every day. So that’s good news.”
Poitras played in Boston’s first game of the preseason the Sunday before, notching an assist in a 3-2 shootout victory over the Washington Capitals.
Poitras was hoping to spend more time in Boston this year. Last season, he was in the lineup just three times, scoring a on Feb. 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He spent most of the 2025-26 season with the Bruins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Providence Bruins. There, the Whitby, Ont. native stood out, setting career highs in assists (31) and points (44), finishing fifth on the team in scoring. His play helped Providence finish with the best record in the AHL, though the team was shockingly eliminated in the Atlantic Division Semifinals by the Springfield Thunderbirds.
Poitras, at the end of his entry-level contract, signed a one-year, two-way extension earlier this month. The deal carries an NHL cap hit of $850,000, with a minor-league salary of $150,000 and a guaranteed salary of $190,000.
In 69 games in the NHL, Poitras has scored seven goals and 27 points. He’s also registered 30 goals and 55 assists for 85 points in 109 regular-season contests in the AHL, with another eight points in 12 Calder Cup Playoff games.
The Bruins open the new season on Tuesday night against the New York Rangers.
