The Boston Bruins have locked up a depth defenseman for a couple more seasons.

The team announced on Monday that they have signed Frederic Brunet to a two-year contract extension.

The new contract will be a two-way deal with an annual NHL cap hit of $875,000.

Brunet, 22, had been in the final season of a three-year, $2.58 million contract, and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after this season.

The Gatineau, Quebec native has not yet played in the NHL this season. In 55 games for the AHL’s Providence Bruins, he has 11 goals and 17 assists for 28 points. Last season, he played 69 games for Providence and notched five goals and 20 assists for 25 points. He also got into one NHL game last season, going scoreless and playing just under 14 and a half minutes in a mid-April 5-4 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Originally drafted by the Bruins out of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic in the fifth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, Brunet joined Boston’s organization full-time for the 2023-24 season, when he scored two goals and added 10 assists for 12 points in 48 games for Providence. Brunet was coming off a productive final season in the QMHJL, when he tallied 16 goals and 57 assists for 73 points in 66 games split between Rimouski and the Victoriaville Tigres.

With 76 points through 63 games, the Bruins currently sit in the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, with a three-point lead over the next closest team. Boston is hoping to get right back into the playoffs after missing the postseason last year for the first time since 2016.

The Bruins will kick off a miniature two-game homestand when they host the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.
