Breaking down Pete DeBoer’s comments on Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger

Following the Dallas Stars’ 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers Thursday night, eliminating them from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff, Stars’ Head Coach Pete DeBoer didn’t hold back when asked about goaltender Jake Oettinger, who let in two goals on two shots, getting pulled in favour of Casey DeSmith after just 7:09 of gameplay. 

“I didn’t blame it all on Jake, but the reality is if you go back to last year’s playoffs, he’s lost six of seven games to Edmonton,” DeBoer said. “And we give up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. It was partly to spark our team and wake them up, but also knowing that the status quo had not been working. That’s a pretty big sample size.”

I’m sorry, I’m not saying at all that Oettinger was great, or that he was above average, or anything like that, but what I am saying is that this is your franchise goalie who is here for the long term. And let me say the quiet part out loud: he’s going to waaaaay outlive you in Dallas. So why do you feel the need to go after him with the early hook, but then to double down, or triple down in the postgame press conference?

That’s going to be a spicy exit meeting, and beyond that, I don’t know how you as a goalie have trust in your head coach next season and beyond.
