Brooke McQuigge and Michela Cava each scored twice as the Minnesota Frost defeated the Toronto Sceptres 7-5 in Game 3 of their best-of-five Walter Cup Playoff matchup, giving the Frost a 2-1 series lead.

Minnesota wasted no time getting the offense going, scoring three times in a five-minute span to take a 3-0 lead before we hit the midway mark of the opening frame.

What made the start all the more impressive for the Frost – and disappointing for the Sceptres – was that Minnesota had scored three times on five shots on Toronto goaltender Kristen Campbell before the Sceptres even registered a shot on goal.

With five minutes to go in the first, Daryl Watts recorded her first goal of the series to cut the deficit to two. Just minutes into the second period, Maggie Connors buried a wrister past Maddie Rooney to make it 3-2.

The Frost responded with a McQuigge power play marker to make it 4-2, then Sophie Jaques scored her second of the series to give Minnesota a three-goal lead.

But just 22 seconds after Jaques scored, Kali Flanagan pounced on a rebound to cut the deficit to two going into the third. Five minutes into the third, Anna Kjellbin scored her first career PWHL goal with a point shot to make it 5-4.

But soon after, Minnesota’s Cava scored twice to extend the lead to three. Toronto captain Blayre Turnbull recorded her second of the series to make it 7-5, but that would be the final score.

Quick stats

• Rooney stopped 18 of 23 shots, and has now made 45 saves on 53 shots in her two starts in the series.

• Campbell struggled mightily for the second straight time, giving up seven goals on just 24 shots. It was the second straight game she’s given up at least five goals, something she hadn’t done since last December.

• Taylor Heise finished with three assists, two of which came on Cava’s third-period goals.

The two teams get a few days off before Game 4 takes place in St. Paul, Minn. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT.
