The Niagara IceDogs of the OHL have hired former longtime NHL coach Bruce Boudreau as a senior advisor, the organization announced Wednesday.

Bruce’s son, Ben Boudreau, was hired this past July as an associate coach for the IceDogs.

“I am very proud, happy, and excited to help the Niagara IceDogs in any way I can,” Boudreau said. “The Niagara area will always have a special place in my heart. I look forward to one day celebrating a Memorial Cup with the Niagara IceDogs.”

Most recently, the elder Boudreau served as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, where he posted a 50-40 record in parts of two seasons before being let go in January of 2023. Beforehand, Boudreau had multiple successful head coaching tenures with other NHL franchises. The Toronto native also coached the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild between 2007 and 2020.

Overall Boudreau has coached 1,087 games in the NHL with a 617-342-128 record split between the Washington Capitals, Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks. Such statistics rank him 21st all-time in NHL games coached as well as coaching victories. Some other notable accolades for Boudreau include winning the Jack Adams award in 2008 after leading the Capitals to a 43-31-8 record to win the Southeast division. Additionally, Boudreau won a Presidents Trophy in 2010 with Washington.

Icedogs owner Darren DeDobbelaer also stated, “Anytime you can add someone with a pedigree, history, and passion like Bruce can bring, it has to be a win for everyone involved. My wife and I are more than excited to welcome Bruce, we are humbled that he would even consider our offer.”

With the wealth of hockey insight and experience Boudreau can offer, the former player and coach should be an integral asset to the IceDogs organization moving forward.
