The Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Josh Doan to a seven-year contract extension, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported Wednesday afternoon.

Doan, 23, has 15 goals and 35 points through 49 games with the Sabres this season. His new contract with the club kicks in next year and reportedly carries a $6.95 million cap hit.

The Sabres originally acquired Doan and Michael Kesselring from the Utah Mammoth at the 2025 NHL Draft in exchange for fellow winger J.J. Peterka, who subsequently signed a five-year extension of his own with Utah.

A second-round pick (No. 37 overall) of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2021 NHL Draft, Doan — whose father is Coyotes legend Shane Doan — emerged from the prestigious Chicago Steel system in the USHL before playing two seasons at Arizona State University.

After scoring 28 goals and 75 points in 74 games over two seasons with the Sun Devils, Doan signed an entry-level contract with the Coyotes in 2023. He appeared in his first 11 NHL games with the Coyotes in the 2023-24 season, collecting five goals and nine points.

Along with the rest of the Coyotes roster, Doan made the transition to Utah for the 2024-25 season. However, he struggled to find his footing with the Utah Hockey Club, managing just seven goals and 19 points in 51 games and spending part of the season with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners.

Deemed expendable by the Utah organization after the season, Doan was ultimately key to the trade return for Peterka, then a disgruntled Sabres forward who refused to sign an extension with the club. Peterka has 16 goals and 32 points in 49 games with the Mammoth this season.

Through 111 career games over parts of three seasons with Arizona, Utah, and Buffalo, Doan has collected 27 goals and 63 points. The Scottsdale product has been integral to the Sabres’ success this year and could be primed to make his Stanley Cup Playoff debut this spring.
