Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau is slated to make his 2025-26 season debut this weekend after being activated off injured reserve on Friday.

Huberdeau, 32, sustained an upper-body injury in the dying minutes of a pre-season game against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 1 after falling awkwardly into goaltender Kevin Lankinen. He missed the first five games of the season, in which the Flames compiled a 1-4-0 record — the worst in the NHL.

The Flames will likely have Huberdeau in the lineup when they take on the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday evening. Huberdeau skated alongside Morgan Frost and Matt Coronato on the Flames’ top line in practice on Friday.

In Huberdeau’s absence, Flames 2024 first-round pick Matvei Gridin made the team out of camp and appeared in his first four NHL games, scoring his first career goal against the Edmonton Oilers in the season opener on Oct. 8. But with Huberdeau now ready to return, the Flames assigned Gridin to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers in a corresponding move on Friday afternoon.

The Flames selected Gridin with the No. 28 overall pick (originally acquired from the Canucks) in the 2024 NHL Draft. The Kurgan, Russia product spent his first post-draft season with the QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes, collecting 36 goals and 79 points in 56 games en route to being named the league’s top rookie.

Huberdeau is about to embark on his fourth season in Calgary since being acquired from the Florida Panthers in the blockbuster Matthew Tkachuk trade back in 2022. The 6’1″ winger has yet to replicate the 115-point season he managed in Florida in the 2021-22 season but did score 28 goals with the Flames last year.

In 912 career NHL games over parts of 13 seasons with the Panthers and Flames, Huberdeau has collected 253 goals and 782 points. The Saint-Jerome, Quebec product has not skated in a playoff game with the Flames to date but has five goals and 21 points in 26 career playoff contests with Florida.
