The Calgary Flames will remain without the services of forward Blake Coleman until after the 2026 Winter Olympics as he continues to recover from an upper-body injury.

Flames head coach Ryan Huska provided the update on Coleman’s status after practice on Wednesday. Coleman, 34, has missed the last eight games with the injury but has resumed practicing in a no-contact jersey, although he did not take part in Wednesday’s skate.

In 44 games with the Flames this season, Coleman has 13 goals and 21 points. The 5’11” left wing is under contract through the 2026-27 season at a $4.9 million cap hit and is a candidate to be on the move ahead of the March 6 trade deadline.

Coleman is in his fifth season as a member of the Flames, having signed a six-year deal with the club as an unrestricted free agent in 2021. The Plano, Texas product has been a strong two-way forward throughout his tenure in Calgary, skating primarily on a shutdown line with captain Mikael Backlund.

The Flames signed Coleman as a UFA from the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom he won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021. Prior to that, Coleman appeared in parts of four seasons with the New Jersey Devils, who selected him in the third round (No. 75 overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft.

In Coleman’s absence, the Flames have relied upon the likes of Yegor Sharangovich and Joel Farabee to fill the void on Backlund’s line and the penalty kill. The Flames currently sit in 30th place in the NHL with a 21-25-6 record and 48 points through 52 games this season.

In 668 career NHL games over parts of 10 seasons with the Devils, Lightning, and Flames, Coleman has collected 163 goals and 311 points. He’s added 12 goals and 31 points in 65 playoff contests with the three clubs.
