On today’s episode of Daily Faceoff Live, insider Frank Seravalli discussed Calgary Flames defenseman Oliver Kylington and provided an update on his status and what the Flames might do with his contract ahead of the March 5 Trade Deadline.

The 25-year-old registered a career-best 31 points (nine goals, 22 assists) in 73 games last season emerging as one of the Flames’ top young defenders. According to our friends at CapFriendly, the Stockholm, Sweden product signed a two-year, $5 million extension last summer. He has a cap hit of $2.5 million. As Seravalli reports, Kylington has not played a single game this season due to personal reasons. This means the Flames are looking to allocate that money elsewhere so that general manager Brad Treliving can do a bit of shopping at the upcoming Trade Deadline.

Frank Seravalli: That brings us to the Calgary Flames, what’s going on with their cap situation and Oliver Kylington. I’m told that there is a mechanism in place to move him to long-term injured reserve and get his cap space as he’s missed the entirety of this season with personal reasons. He has remained in Sweden, he has not come over to North America and it seems unlikely that he will play. He’s been on their cap all season long and the Flames who have space as it is, and need more, can convert and find a way to move Kylington’s $2.5 million cap hit to long-term injured reserve and have more space available at the deadline. I don’t think they’ve been very active in talks, but I do know general manager Brad Treliving keeps tabs on just about everything around the league.
