The Calgary Flames will be without one of their depth forwards for some time.

The team announced on Tuesday that John Beecher will be out week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

Beecher, 24, sustained the injury in a fight with Nicolas Hague during Calgary’s 4-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Saturday. The Elmira, New York native appeared to be favoring his left arm after the scrap.

The fight was in retaliation to Beecher’s cheap shot on Nashville’s Michael McCarron earlier in the game.

Beecher was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins on November 18th. In 19 games played with Calgary this season, he has just two assists. He had a goal in six games with Boston before being waived.

Selected in the first round, 30th overall, by the Bruins in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Beecher would go on the play three collegiate seasons for the University of Michigan before becoming a full-time professional for the 2022-23 season. In 61 games playing for the AHL’s Providence Bruins that year, he had nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points.

Beecher got his first extended time at the NHL level in the 2023-24 season, when he put up seven goals and three assists for 10 points over 52 games for the Bruins. He also had four goals and four assists for eight points in 17 games for Providence that season.

He then spent all of last season up with the Bruins, registering just three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 78 games.

Beecher is on a one-year, $900,000 contract he signed with Boston last summer. He is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after this season.

The Flames will kick off a five-game road trip on Wednesday when they take on the Montreal Canadiens.
