MacKenzie Weegar certainly has a case for the most creative way to be tossed from an NHL game.

Midway through the Calgary Flames’ game against the Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night, the defenseman was ejected after banging his stick against the glass while in the penalty box.

Weegar was originally given a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct after slashing Oilers’ defenseman Darnell Nurse’s stick out of his hand. Once he sat in the penalty box, Weegar, who said something to the official on his way to the box, repeatedly tapped the blade of his stick against the glass.

Weegar would be given an additional misconduct and a game misconduct. He finished the night with one goal, two shots, one hit and 22 penalty minutes in 9:05 of ice time.

Through 37 games in 2025-26, the 31-year-old blueliner has three goals and nine assists for 12 points and 57 penalty minutes. Now in his 10th NHL season, the Ottawa native has 62 goals and 201 assists for 263 points in 587 career regular-season games with the Flames and Florida Panthers.

Weegar also has one goal and four assists for five points in 20 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The right-handed blueliner was acquired by the Flames in 2022, along with Jonathan Huberdeau, Cole Schwindt and a first-round pick, from the Panthers in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk and a fourth-round pick.

A few months later, Weegar and the Flames signed an eight-year, $50-million contract extension that would pay him $6.25 million a year through the 2030-31 season.

Taken in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Panthers, Weegar spent two seasons with the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads, where he scored 20 goals and 83 assists for 103 points in 123 regular-season games. He won both the President’s Cup and Memorial Cup with the team in 2013.
