A veteran got a little careless with his stick and has to pay up for his actions.

On Wednesday, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Calgary Flames forward Ryan Strome has been fined $5,000 for cross-checking Dallas Stars forward Jason Robertson.

The incident took place during overtime of a game between the two Western Conference foes on Tuesday night. In the opening minute of extra time, Strome caught Robertson right in the mouth with a high stick while battling for a puck. Robertson was bleeding almost immediately and went down the tunnel with the Stars’ training staff.

Strome was handed a double-minor for high-sticking. Strome was a little hot under the collar. Earlier in the game, he was hit from behind by Stars defenseman Tyler Myers, which bloodied the 32-year-old. However, after a video review, the penalty was completely rescinded.

The penalty ended up costing Calgary, as Wyatt Johnston scored on the man advantage, giving Dallas a 4-3 win. Paired with a Nashville Predators win over the Anaheim Ducks that same night, the Flames were officially eliminated from contention for the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The fine is the maximum allowable under the current collective bargaining agreement, and is paid to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

This isn’t the first time that Strome has faced supplemental discipline in his NHL career. In April 2023, as a member of the Ducks, he was fined $5,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct after throwing a water bottle onto the ice following the Colorado Avalanche’s overtime win over Anaheim. Less than a year later, he was given another $5,000 fine for cross-checking Seattle Kraken forward Tye Kartye.

Tuesday’s contest was Strome’s 16th appearance with the Flames, as he was acquired by Calgary from the Ducks just before the deadline. He’s scored 11 points so far with his new team, potting eight goals and 20 points in 49 games in total this year.
